I'm intrigued by both of those options as well as Bear's Best or take an even farther hike out to Legacy. Any reviews on Legacy? Travel time on a Sunday morning? Cheers!

 

Don't go play legacy, it's a short executive course. If you do want to "venture out" a bit, Reunion, Chateau Elan, Achasta, Echelon, and Barnsley Gardens are all much better options if you're up for a drive. Bears best is ok, sometimes it's in good shape, but it can get pretty crowded especially on weekends.

 

Sorry we might be talking about different courses, I meant Legacy on Lanier Islands, unless that is what you are also talking about.

Yeah, Legacy is great for 9 after work if you are on that side of town, but nothing else.

Different courses - they are talking about Legacy Golf Links which is over by 75/285 as opposed to Lake Lanier.

Flying into Atlanta on September 17th (Sunday) for a week and staying at the Hyatt in Norcross for work. Would like to play a round Sunday when I get in (won't have time during the week, maybe Thursday though). Looking for good recommendations on courses close to the area that have rental clubs available. If anyone would like to play as well, even better. Cheers!

Heritage is ok... but as a single can get really crowded and slow especially on the weekends... you're looking at a 4.5 hour round MINIMUM. Most of the other places are much less crowded, and in the case of river pines, strictly enforces pace of play regulations.

If your in Norcross go to St Marlo. Should be right by you for a decent price. You can also rent clubs from the PGA superstore in Roswell if you don't want to worry about rental clubs at the course.

 

I will agree that St. Marlo is the best choice of the bunch. Bear's Best is expensive and usually crowded with members. River Pines is ok and skip Heritage.

You can get some good rates if you don't mind aerated greens, usually half.

Depending on your tee, I would say there are several par 4s where your hitting iron off the tee. Namely 1,6,7,9,10,11, sometimes 13.

 

Expect furry bent greens and ramming it at the hole this time of year.

 

Also very busy.

 

Quality practice facilities though.

Expect furry bent greens and ramming it at the hole this time of year.

 

Also very busy.

 

Quality practice facilities though.

 

River pines actually has some Nice quick bent greens.

 

#1 No way you hit an iron, unless you can slam a 3i 230+

 

#6 is a forced layup due to water. Good little hole.

 

#7 clear the creek. Easy with driver.

 

#9 & 10 sure.

 

#11 you've got 240+ to the water

 

 

It's a fun track and always in good shape. You can learn to be a great iron player by playing here.

#1 I agree it's not a driver hole. There's a speed slot down the right side of the fairway about 220 yards out that will roll you down the fairway for a 100 yard approach to green. If you don't hit that slot, your prob 175-190 out with an iron off the tee.

 

#7 is a 330yd par 4. Layup to left side fairway (by bridge) is 175 yards off tee. I always found that hitting driver was the best case for easy par and good birdie chance.

 

#11 is a tough hole

 

River pines was my home course about 6-10 years ago. I've played it 100+ times. I personally like it, but can see why others wouldn't as it's a bit quirky and punishing.

River Pines isn't the fanciest of courses BUT I love the practice area and it's always been in good shape the 50+ times I've played it. #11 isn't that tough if you can hit a 200 yard shot either straight or with a slight draw (aiming slightly right of center). Left is bad as the creek is parallel to the entire hole. Right isn't bad unless you make it to the water and then again you have water to the right of the green. I think #15 is a tougher hole than #11 if you don't hit the left side of the fairway in the right spot.
