Atlanta Golf

I will be traveling to Atlanta from Charleston, SC in July for the Metallica concert. Looking to sneak in 18 holes/ maybe 36 holes over Saturday and Sunday. Anyone have any course recommendations for the area? I will have my car to drive as needed. Have seen Echelon and Bears Best mentioned.

The rest are 20-45min drive: ranked imo

 

Echelon - must play - some crazy stuff

Bridgemill - great course - par 3 island green

The frog - a bit of a drive - always in good shape

Woodmont - a little further out, great shape

Bears best - super overrated Imo - fun course tho

 

The rest are usually in good shape and worth playing

Have not booked a hotel yet. I am willing to drive probably an hour or so away from the downtown area.

Echelon is awesome but hard. Tight, long, and hilly. But usually in great shape.

Bridgemill is also a good one.

Lake Lanier course is fun if you enjoy lots of water and losing a lot of golf balls

RiverPines is good if you can get a tee time. Usually packed.

Everything else is private and you have to know someone.

Coming down to Atlanta on Sunday and playing Lake Lanier on Monday. Anyone know how the conditions are?

 

Also, am I reading the website correctly when it says NO ALCOHOL is allowed? Is that no outside alcohol?

They sell alchohol. Great course btw. Don't be a p***y on #3.. drive the green.

Heading to Atlanta the first weekend in May, looking to get one round in probably Friday. Currently staying downtown with limited transportation options, and would need to rent.

 

Given all the above info, am I still looking at some of the courses listed above, or are there other options? Note that I'm going to be travelling with a buddy who's a ~3x/yr golfer so difficulty is not high on the priority list. Just looking for an enjoyable round.

Hotel is on the north side of town in the Buckhead/Lindbergh area. Have transportation but during the week it will be all after 4:00 golf.

To be honest, you won't have too many great options at that time during the week with traffic, especially from that area and I-85 out of commission making the rest of a crappy traffic situation even worse. Best options are probably North Fulton or Bobby Jones. Otherwise, you will be sitting in the car for a while after 4:00 PM for any public access courses that are better courses than those two. If you belong to a club, you may be able to ask a pro to make a call to one of the private clubs depending on any reciprocity deals that might be set up.

Friday is just a travel day as is Sunday. I think I will do Sweeten's Cove and Sewanee one way or another either coming down or going back. I am at my leisure on both sunday and friday.

Surprised no one has mentioned Heritage in Tucker, GA.

 

Its been a year or so since I played but the place is pretty solid.

 

Its close to Atlanta proper especially if you're around the NE side (Buckhead-Brookhaven, Decatur, Va Hi)

I loved that course, but had heard it had gone way down hill over the last few years.

Yea heritage has a GREAT track. One of my all time favorites. The conditions are a mixed bag tho.

 

Haven't been out there in 2-3 years but loved the course when it was in goood shape.

Just go play wolf creek. Closest and a good course

trying to avoid public play and most reese jones courses. if anyone wants to host me let me know; i'll gladly return the favor if you're ever in the tampa and orlando area

Some courses I like to play, but haven't seen mentioned:

 

Crystal Lake - about 45 minutes south of downtown on 75

Summergrove - about 45 minutes south of downtown on 85

Smoke Rise - about 30 minutes northeast of downtown

 

If you're willing to drive a bit further, Achasta is fantastic as is Harbor Club.

I've played smokerise several times. Not an easy track, especially for the first time. Several holes where you think you hit good shots and your ball is gone... Dog leg one way, but hole sloped the other way, etc.

Would like to play a round Sunday when I get in (won't have time during the week, maybe Thursday though). Looking for good recommendations on courses close to the area that have rental clubs available. If anyone would like to play as well, even better. Cheers!

If you're wanting to stay near your hotel I would probably play River Pines. I'm sure they have rentals, and the course is pretty nice, looks like one of the closest to your hotel as well.

Don't go play legacy, it's a short executive course. If you do want to "venture out" a bit, Reunion, Chateau Elan, Achasta, Echelon, and Barnsley Gardens are all much better options if you're up for a drive. Bears best is ok, sometimes it's in good shape, but it can get pretty crowded especially on weekends.

Yeah, Legacy is great for 9 after work if you are on that side of town, but nothing else.
