tough question. variable for a lot of people (rarely do good players hit full speed or the same shot, instead they're looking for a trajectory or a specific result rather than full distance).

i'd say average has to be anywhere from 140-170 with huge variance.

for myself, around 165 full, but play it more for 160-150.

From what I've seen, around 145 to 155 average but that's including a lot of older guys I play with. I'm playing 1" long 105g shafts and figure mine for around 165-170carry.

As far as those 198yd. averages... I've yet to see anyone under about 90yrs. old who doesn't hit a driver 198yds. on a "good" (for them anyway) swing. I suppose if you include the twice a year crowd that shoots 134 even with 7 mulligans and go through 16 Top Flites in one round. Those are not "golfers". I'm basing my estimates on what I see at the 120-140 slope tracks I play.

Loaded question.... :partytime2:

For me..140 yards. If I get a little buttock into it, 150, but I have no idea where it's going!

I have hit my 7 iron 180 before, but the comfortable distance with it is 165. i used it to hit a shot 150 yards last week and stuffed it to 10 feet pin high.

the yardage with all my clubs is variable, so here are the yardages i play for out of different situations with a full swing.

tee-170

fairway-165

rough-160

sand-155ish

pinestraw-160

My safest shorts are my knockdown shots so I normally only use it for about 150 of carry plus some role. When my friend lost a bet and had to caddy for me a round he tricked me into hitting a 7 iron into a 183 yard par 3 and somehow(I must have pured it) it dropped just past the flag and unlike most of my shots trickled back. Just one of those days.

With my strong-lofted Nickent 7-iron (30*), I can comfortably get 150. The course I regularly play at has a few holes where it's level from about 160 to the green, and I've found myself right by the white marker many times and hit a 7-iron "somewhere" on the green.

I did hit one 165-ish one time, but it was downhill and I really went after the ball much harder than I normally would, because the green was itsy-bitsy, teeny-tiny.

See, that's the key, though. People say their averages are when they nut their drivers, when in reality, they are going to average much closer to 200 yards. Ernie Els may be able to hit his driver 380 yards once a year at Sony, but it would be a bs answer for him to say I hit my driver 380.

I'd base it on the "average" golfer being the guy who has a handicap of around 17 and generally has a good day when he plays bogey golf. Yeah, he may hit 1-10 230-240, but that's like Albert Pujols saying he hits a homerun every AB.

This thread is a perfect example of why every pro has the same criticism of all their pro-am partners:

They never use enough club.

FLAT CONDITIONS, NO WIND: 168 is my perfect SMOOTH 7 iron distance also, I can take some off or go after it a little harder, but I go to 6 when 175 comes into play...

Taking this into account, I usually use a 7 when I'm anywhere from 161-173 (I'd rather take more club than less and smooth it)...

my standard 36 degree 7 iron (my irons were bent one deg. weak) carries 160-165. i can get one to go 175, but i'm out of my comfort zone there.

i'm surprised no one has brought up the issue of loft. my 7 iron may be someone else's 6 or their 8.

average also depends on the age group, methinks. most guys in their 20's can hit their 7 iron 160+, even if their handicap is more than their age. but i would think that the average recreational 20 handi golfer in their 40s is closer to 140-145 with their 7 iron.

generally, the lower the handicap, the longer the player, but i think you get a lot of overlap at with mid handicappers. an 18 handicap can hit their 7 iron with some consistency, but i've seen too many of them overswing (esp. the young guys), whereas you're less likely to see that from an 8 or a 10. i know this one guy who hits his standard 7 iron 175, but he can't hit it any harder than that if he wanted to.

i'm also intrigued by those random playing partners that ask me what club i hit, when they have no idea how far my 8 iron or whatever goes (of course that's different from your regular playing buddies).
