7 Iron Distance

1913Open

Recommended Posts

I'm a 14 index. Hit driver ~245 carry (confirmed, not imaginary!)

Off a tee box, I'll hit 7i 160. Off the fairway, it's my 150 club (flat, no wind, etc.). Easy and smooth. Stops, too.

At the range, I'll sometimes flirt with the 180 marker with a 7i once I'm dialed in, but I've learned to not try that on the course.

At my range I have a green 176 out and I use my seven iron to put it on. It has to be a solid pure shot though. On a course I would probably use a nice 6i. That is the problem that I see with my playing partners, they try to match what everyone else is doing instead of knowing their clubs. On the course if I was 175 out and I pulled out my 7i and hit it 8 our of 10 times I am short. Trust your play and play your shots.

I consider myself to be a average golfer that takes playing the game fairly seriously. I am 28yrs old. My handicap is sitting right around 16 right now. 7i is 34 degree loft.

A buddy of mine just bought a golf gps, took it out to a local course yesterday. The course was pretty empty and the marshal allowed us to hit a bunch of balls on a flat par 5 fairway. I hit 10 balls with 7i If you throw out the 3 major mishits my average 146.7. Longest was 158.

I think as i get more consistant with my irons i would say that i will be hitting the 7i for a average of 150.....

170-175 on full swing from the fairway...

local course has a 177yd par 3. completely flat over water and I usually hit a smooth 7 to the middle/back of the green with the ball very slightly tee'd up.

my clubs are +1" so that helps a bit. if I really wack the crap out of it and catch it good it'll go 180+ but it could go 50 yards right or left so i usually use a smooth short 6 iron on anything 180+

  • 1 year later...

I'm a 14 (and dropping!), 27 years old and have been playing for almost 6 years (no lessons). I tend to swing at around 75% and focus more on solid contact and hit it about 150 (carry). If I really go at it, I can get up to 160 or 165 but I only do that at the range. No need for hero shots like that on course... I'll just club up. haha.

Here are a couple of links to sites that provide some info on the distances that various clubs are hit. The first link gives averages for a 40 year old male of average height, compared with a tour pro. The second allows one to enter personal data and it calculates the distances one should expect for each club in the bag. No idea how accurate these are, but they seem reasonable.

FWIW, the first link says that a 40 year old male of average height would hit a 7-iron 140 yards into a still wind. Average hitters on the PGA Tour range between 165-180, according to the site. I think these are carry distances, also, and do not include roll which can vary widely.

I carry about 170-175 with a nice smooth swing and good contact. I have roasted one closer to 200 over some trees hitting from the adjacent fairway toward the green of the hole i was supposed to be playing on... However, I really don't feel comfortable trying to hit it like that as I rarely make good contact when I go after it. Normally I would hit a 4 iron comfortably from 200 to ensure that I don't have to swing too hard, but in this case I needed the loft of a 7 iron to get over the trees!

Stock 7 160

I hit a Burner 2.0 w/KB Tour shafts the other day though and was hitting a smooth one over 170 and stepped on one and hit it just over 180. Talk about juiced. Wow! Made me think, but I really like my TPs.

I don't want to be the guy to burst your bubble but the reason you hit the burner so far is that its closer to the loft on your 6 iron. Standard 7 iron loft on those i think is 32 degrees (which is the loft on my 6 iron... lol) so thats the reason you're hitting it further. OEM's are making clubs "hotter" by making the lofts stronger and putting lower kick lightweight shafts for more speed and more height.

My automatic thought with a 35* club is 150-155. I hit the ball really high so I don't get much roll. I am working on the descending strike and it really throws me off at times. When I "pure" it I have seen up to about 175.

+1 here carry mine 150 very consistently when i stay down through the shot and hit it pure which isnt all hat often 160.

225, 235 if I really pound it.

jeez. how far are your drives? 450?? lol

245. Honestly I hit my 7 iron 155, I'm 53 and for the first time used my driver on a 235 yard par 3 into the wind the other day. That was really hard to swallow. I've definitely have reached old guy golf status. BTW, I birdied the long par 3.
