r7 TP 7 iron loft: 35*

170 is the stock yardage from a decent lie. off the tee, i hit it about 178-180 without an issue. I draw everything, so that definitely helps me to hit it that far.

my 36* 7 iron is my 170 club in normal conditions. I'm not an iron artist like some others, I don't have enough time under my belt to be able to do lots of different things with my irons. . .although I don't simply go by my yardages. its all about conditions, how I'm playing, lie, uphill or downhill, all that good stuff. but I've found if I do the whole "club up and swing smooth" thing I lose my consistency. hit it better when I stay smooth but aggresive.

oh, and I don't overly deloft. actually, I hit my irons REALLY high. a well struck 7 iron never rolls more than 5 ft at the most, which lets me stay aggressive. I know its not because of my skill, so all I have to say is THANKS MIZUNO!

  • 1 year later...

With my Callaway x-16s I hit my 7 iron 185-190 yards with a very very high ball flight. The problem is that I also hit my 5 iron about 185-190 yards on a decently struck ball. In reality I average more distance with my 7 iron than my 5 iron as I am 1000 times more consistent with it. I feel like I'm barely swinging with my seven iron too.

These distances are measured with sky caddy over the past couple of weeks as i've been trying to figure out my iron distances. I would hit four five irons off a tee and then hit a seven iron that flies five yards past them. This happened over and over again. I think this is why I score better with my Ping eye2s -- my distances are a lot more sane and predictable. Plus I don't have a 20 yard gap between my eight and seven iron with the Pings.

what does it mean if someone hits an improvement club the same distance as a person using blades? NOTHING!

distance means nothing today! why are so many people caught up with distance today? with yesterday's clubs you actually had to put an effort into your swing and control if you wanted to hit a decent shot, that is why distance was so admired; today's improved clubs don't require such dedication to get the ball into the air. don't get me wrong, golf is still a game that is frustrating even with today's technology, however, when most people are getting their balls to the green on a 320 yard par 4 with their drive, i'd say we have come a long way with golfing equipment.

I don't know the exact averaged distance I hit my 7iron but if I need 160-170 yards I pull it, if it's 170-180ish I grab a 6, and 140-160 I grab the 8.

That's pretty much where I am also - depending on whether the trouble/water is in front or back of the green & what kind of swing day i'm having.

My 8 iron is 40 degrees loft.

(Would have been one club shorter several years ago, but hitting it better now)

I have made it a point to "own" 4 clubs in my bag. My driver, my 7i, my PW and my putter.

I can hit my 7i in my sleep. It will carry 157-160 yards and roll 2-3 yards.

I know my 7i like I know the back of my hand. If I am stressed, I will hit dial down my drive or hit a shorter club to leave myself

a 160 7i rather than a 140 yard 9i anytime.

there are a lot of guys on here that would give Daly, Woods and Bubba a run for their money on distance alone!

So what would you say those 3 guys hit their 7 irons on a normal swing? My normal 7 iron from the fairway carries just over 170 yards. But once today I had 183 to the pin in the first cut and hit 7 iron about 12 feet left of the pin...another time I had 156 into a slight breeze and hit the same 7 iron. A guy I play with carries his 7 iron 185 yards...were both + handicaps. Its not unrealistic for guys that hit it out of the center of the club face to hit irons similar distances to touring professionals.

They print their avg 7 iron distances in Golf Digest for WITB. 7 irons for the majority of the pros is 170-175 yds. Like they say on the PGA Tour, "These Guys are Good". In this case, that means you and a whole bunch of the rest of the guys who post here. Congrats! NOthing to be ashamed about.

Here is Geoff Ogilvy....172 yds avg for a 7-iron.

Good lord some of you guys hit the ball far ....

I am a 5'8". I hit a 7 iron with the new swing 140-150

I hit my 4 iron 190-200ish

Fairway Hybrid I get a lot of air and hit over 200.

Driver, I hit like absolute poo, and get 225-240 but I have a huge problem with my driver. Ballooning and backspin like a mother.

Some of you guys hit some massive 7 iron shots. Jeez!

however, when most people are getting their balls to the green on a 320 yard par 4 with their drive,

Most people? What planet do you live on?

let me rephrase that: the AVERAGE golfer.

Your idea of 'average' is far different than mine since I don't know any golfers that could do this - at least not more than 1/10th of the time.

About 165 with my Bridgestone combos I played the last few years, I could get up over 170 I guess when I really go after it, but don't like to swing that hard. 36 degrees loft, but +1/2 inch, PX 6.5. The combos were a bit shorter than the Cally X-16 pros I was playing before, but the lofts on the callys where stronger.

I just put the TM RAC CBs in the bag after I had them reshafted with KBS Tour 6.5s, also plus 1/2 inch. They seem to play about the same at the Bridgestones, I have yet to dial them in on course to figure out exactly how far I'm hitting them.

That's a +1.

I've been spending a bit of time lately at public driving ranges, and while I've enough to worry about, with my own game, I've seen enough that the notion of an 'average' golfer banging out 320 yard drives boggles the mind. I'd think 220 is more realistic.

If you discount the miss-hits.

As another data-point, I hit the 7-iron 'about' 160, but I'm more and more likely to use it 150 yards away, with an easier swing, than a full 8-iron.

Funny to read this again. I've gone way down to about 155 with my 7i since changing to clubs with heavier shafts and weaker lofts. My GIR have doubled though so it's all good.

I have to wonder how often anyone who hits a 180yd. + 7i ever even needs one? I mean, I don't really hit a whole lot of 7i's on the course. I hit mostly 8-SW on approach shots and don't use a driver but once or twice a round. So if I'm out at 240+ carry with a 3W and a 155yd. 7i, someone with a 180yd. 7i must be putting it inside wedge range on every par 4.
