Not gonna lie, I get a little proud b/c I do hit the ball a fairly long way, and it's about the only consistent thing I have going for me. I almost always get it in the middle of the face, but I'm living proof that you can do that consistently and still miss your target. I'd give anything to trade a little distance for some more accuracy.

you can hit it anywhere from 200 to 130. just depends on if you want to deloft the club or not..

What he said...lol...I think the anecdote about Ben Hogan hitting into a Par Three and then being asked what he hit after he stuck it on the green within birdie range answers this question best. Instead of telling the playing partner what club he hit he pulled another club from his bag and stuck the shot next to the first and then repeated this once more with yet a different club. The moral of the story is, it doesn't matter what anyone else hits (or claims to hit...lol) thier 7I. It should only matter to you how far you hit it. Thank goodness where I grew up playing a short round of "one club" wasn't the lost art it appears to be now. Threads like this always make me think of a good friend of mine who's chest puffs out everytime he hoods (delofts) his Wedge and hits it 150 yds...too funny...J

As I have improved, I have taken to hitting irons not as far. I CAN hit a 7i 165. But, I use it for 150 yards. Nice and smooth, hitting like it's a wedge.

An eeeeeezy backswing; a languid downswing. Bink.

140-150 seems the predominant 7i distance among my crowd (12-20 handicap). And it seems pretty much unrelated to driver distance. I'm almost always the long driver in my group, but I don't hit irons any farther than anyone else.

In fact, I'm kinda surprised how far people my age (48) don't hit driver.

I see a lot of people making reference to irons going further due to delofting or "hooding" the face. While I agree this would cause a ball struck off the same iron to go further than if the face were not de-lofted, but it is not the only reason for an iron to go far.

I play with a regular saturday morning group and I am probably the shortest player in the group (hit my 7 iron about 158). These guys don't hit low "hooded" 7 irons 180 yards, they hit high, towering 7 irons that go 180 or 185 yards and it's impressive. The reason? They SWING HARDER THAN I DO!

It is definitely funny when someone asks what another person hit. Sometimes it's just out of curiosity, sometimes they base a club selection on it

I had a guy do this yesterday. Little 140yd. par 3 downhill, elevated green with 5 bunkers. Pin was back, wind swirling, I hit a 3/4 8iron nice and low to exactly pin high and spun back a foot. He asked if I hit a wedge? He tries wedge, 20yds. short, 9iron, short right into the bunker. lol. I've hit that green with a gap wedge but knew I needed that low 3/4 shot to take the wind out of play. I didn't feel any less of a man taking my tap in 3 over his double. lol.

The more interesting question: What percentage of your 7 irons hit the green and stay there. I don't care how far I hit it, I care how accurately I hit it. (and I am not short with my irons)

I'm trending this way as well. I hit a full 7 about 175-180 and high, but I've started hitting a lot of 3/4 shots with focus on accuracy and lower ball flight lately. Much easier to control and play in the wind this way, and certainly doesn't hurt on days when it's not windy.

It's amazing for me to see all these numbers that are a lot lower than I thought... most of them are undre 150 or around there yet everyones average drive (in that old post) seems to be a lot farther than me (i'm assuming you guys were downhill/downwind lol). My 7-iron is my 150 club.

I drive 250 routinely, rarely <240, with a few 260-270 each round. But I hit gap wedge from 100, and a 7i 150, just like the guys who hit driver 25y shorter than I do. I can't imagine hitting a 7i 175y into a green like some of these guys. I'd spin myself in a circle trying to do that.

It really does not matter how far I hit the ball but how consistently I can hit it that far.

I hit a seven iron max about 155. I hit the ball very vertical and even with high tech I am still getting older.

Based on my distance loss and new equipment . In my youth I probably would have been comfortable at 165.

Now a little survey for you in your own foursome, this will vary some for lower handicaps but not much.

Ninety percent of the time the ball comes up short of the pin. Don't believe me take notes survey it.

Also its a lot easier to control distance with and easy swing that is not trapping the ball than a trap hard swing.

I went thru a period at about 23 or 24 when I was killing my irons nine irons 175 but I never had and idea how far they were going

Distance control is way more important than distance with and iron. My pure shot and my slight miss do not go that much different because I control it.

I also almost always hit enough club. Oh I occassionaly really nut one and go long, but not nearly as often as my playing partners are short.

Do the survey you will be amazed.

I hit mine 168 yards carry each and every time :D

OK, give or take a couple of yards :man_in_love: ..........167-169 yards carry. I play with stiff shafts in my irons (Black Gold stiff and Tour Flighted Rifle 5.5)

My preferred iron shot is a small draw. A hard draw with my 7 iron will probably go 172-173 yards carry and a relaxed fade will probably go 163-165 yards.

By the nature of it, my fades with my irons are always 7-8 yards shorter than my draws.
