GTW: I gotta practice those bad lie chips in spotty rough where your ball is sitting on hardpan but its sort of surrounded by grass or clumps of grass. I never know what to do off those. NW9 last week I drove it up near the green but in one of those lies, tried to play a nice easy clip shot - thinned it dead over the green.

GTW:

When I have like a 30-40 yard shot into a green, particularly a slightly elevated green, my miss is short 90% of the time. When I make sure to "get it there", I end up further past the hole than my typical "short shot".

I'm far from alone in the world of amateur golfers in that.

I've tried to address it primarily with club choice. It's a tough shot to find a place to practice.

Chunks and thins can not just be solved with bounce. Good contact on basic chip shots off fairway lies take repetition. The amount of time required to get these shots right isn't infinity, but it might as well be for most people. It's just not something people are going to put the necessary work into.

I know the type of shot you're talking about. In general, shots from bad lies around the green are huge scoring shots, if for no other reason than they come up so frequently. They're "artistic" shots. Not the kind of thing you can just describe how to play. Just have to practice out of crappy lies as much as one possibly can.

The club is not the answer, if he's chunking and thinning. You gotta make like Gang Starr and Check The Technique, GMen.

Always the club... then we have no one to blame other than ourselves.

Says the guy who buys irons all of the time.

Let us get serious for moment...

If some chunks all of the time ... technique, ball placement, etc

What if he was given something with more bounce which is design to go through and get to the ball than just dig into the ground.

If the impact spot is the same/consistent... moar bounce would get more of ball than ground.

A club will not €™solve this I know but if he is constantly digging it’s something to add to the think bank.

Different scenario. You can't buy your way out of poor technique. Basic chips aren't that hard to learn. GMen can knock that out in his living room with some wiffle ball practice if he wants.

I don't buy new clubs because I think they're going to be a magic elixer for my golf game. I buy them because I like tinkering and trying different stuff.

No doubt. If that same distance shot is off the fairway, I'm having a reasonable look at birdie....90% of the time and something makeable maybe half the time. As it was that bad shot turned a reasonable look at 3 into a really bad 5.

Buy the Monte video "Use The Bounce". One of the best/easiest to understand instruction videos I've ever watched.

I set up a chipping net in the basement last winter. Well, its a full size net but in a basement with 8 foot ceilings, I can only hit half wedge shots safely. But what you can do is just hit hundreds of chip shots to practice making perfect contact.

tex, i need to test drive and sureout. when can we meet up? i have literally forgotten how to play bunker shots from what we typically see at the courses we play.

sidenote: the sand on the NW's inside 9 is awesome. not being sarcastic. i hit a few practice sand shots there the other day... not one skull. so much easier to play from "good" sand it's not even funny.

got out with my boy for a few holes. kid is starting to elevate his shots above head high. progress. :)

ok i'll say it. i don't need to learn any new shots. i only need to continue to practice the shots i play. over the past couple years i spent time learning to hit a lower running shot. it just doesn't come up enough to make it worth learning AND it took time away from practicing the shots i DO use

the only way to learn how to play from bad lies is to practice. And i love the description of them as "artsy". Your eyes read the lie and tell your hands what to do. one of the practice areas at turf has pretty bad grass around it. it's great for practicing those shots.

I am flying back to Texas next week for a quick little stay then Disney world the week after.

Yup. How many times do you see people practicing, hitting over and over from the fringe, or fluffing every ball to the top of the grass with their wedge before they hit? Then they get a "real" lie on the course and don't know what to do.

The stuff DC is talking about is tough. It's not even just a ball sitting down. It's a ball on hardpan with grass clumps around it. I think up to a certain level of proficiency, you just have to play those conservatively to give yourself a putt. You realize it's not a shot you're comfortable really trying to get close, and be happy to bump up on the green to 10-15 feet.

How did that short game practice early in the knee recovery work out for you, Domes? Do you feel like that helped your short game play over the course of this season, versus previous years?

Yes it definitely helped. Much sharper around the green. Short game and putting were the two things that helped me bring the cap down this year. It's not surprising that's all I did for a couple of months.

That being said, I've completely stopped practicing around the green, and can't seem to get the ball in the hole anymore. Probably just a coincidence.

JohnnyT. During our match at the 7s last year. That was the better of their two drives. And they still won the hole.

Fabb: you want this shot in your arsenal? It's in Monte's "call your shot" video. But you probably need to buy a new club to pull off.

Why are my favorite thread GIFs of eagle? I don't even like that guy!

Thankfully in my search for this GIF, I came across a CityPost (http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1165365-mdvadc-golfers-ten-seconds-or-less/page__st__52140#entry15253824) that I must've glanced by at the time. Great Smokin' 827 pic in that post.
