LOL having a site that's "Metro accessible" isn't exactly a selling point these days. Metro is in a virtual death spiral and has been for years.

If having reliable public transportation is a requirement of Amazon, there is a 0% chance they pick anything in this area.

The more I look at the list the more I think it could be an out of the box choice like Raleigh, Nashville or Toronto.

Getting some sort of package/promise from DC is just a really smart way of starting a biding war with the city you really want to pick.

Boom.

You got a handicap, golferdrew?

Last five rounds 83, 82 79, 78, 77. Shot 82 at Laurel Hills on Monday.

Do you keep your scores tracked somewhere?

Scores without slope and rating info aren't all that helpful.

in a PM, i suggested a CH of 6. for our purposes, for winter golf, i think it'll suffice.

In addition to the data centers, AWS has an office out toward Dulles that I think is its original HQ. So they do have a good base here already. They also have a big cloud deal with the CIA and could probablly stand to grow out their govt business more.

I think the area has to be the front-runner if all else is equal from a plot of land perspective. Or maybe theyve driven the Dulles Toll Road and 495 enough at rush hour and know to totally avoid it.

Absolutely zero impact on the local golf scene.

OK it cant be zero so I'll say less than 1% impact.

Tex...that is silly....fantastic work they came out great!! Serious question, did you buy an anvil? I have a stamp set and test stamped a couple of wedges last year but it sucked. I had them in a vise on my workbench but even after torching the wedge, it was awful.

I did man from Harbor freight.

Guys like Tarranto and others use some sort of electronic magnet to keep their stuff still.

Rednecks use double side tape and an anvil or bench vise grip with the flat portion on the back.

The anvil works good for what I wanted.. but it leaves swirls.

A lot of people just use those metal squares you can get at ac Moore, etc for jewelry stamping.

Also.. not all stamp sets are equal. Some aren’t rated for stainless steel. I’m still getting the jist of it but copper/brass is so much easier than steel.

I tried a few old irons they are tough. Doable but tough.

In terms of the golf scene, I don't know.

It's not like the old days where the guys who owned the steel mill built sparrows point so they could golf.

Who knows with these nerds today. They're probably more interested in playing pokemon and quidditch.

I kind of assume we add and subtract 50,000 jobs around here when the unemployment rate moves 1% so I don't really see it having a massive effect on traffic or placing a greater demand on time-dependent leisure activities like golf.

I'd like to see it have a positive effect on Baltimore.

(pause for laughter)

No really. There's actually parts of Baltimore that get marketed as housing options for DC professionals. Plenty of people work in DC/MC and live in Baltimore. There are still parts of Baltimore that are insanely cheaper to live in than DC/MC that are fine and/or getting better (read gentrified).

Amazon will build in a city where people can walk to work. That's how they have it set up in Seattle.

raliegh should have a way cheaper cost of construction, cheaper labor, a sufficient labor force, and an international airport. so something like that should make sense.

but i agree with the article i posted that bezos already knows the answer. and i'm not sure his reasons match the RFP at all

we should all be rooting HARD against amazon coming to our region

please elaborate.

IMO the Research Triangle area offers anything the DMV could provide - for far cheaper.

married life is on its way to RUINING you. lol

So from november 15th through christmas was an insane time at work. Most stressful time of my career. My only conversations were contentious ones with attorneys and borrowers.

Then the added stress of the wedding

Throw in travelling for Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

Been to the doctor twice since the honeymoon because I'm still feeling "off" and I've had a swollen gland for 2 months. turns out I have MONO again (had it in college, like everyone else).

Also, went to a concert last night in college park and didn't get home until 12:30. Mono can s my d.

Are you saying DC is a city where people can walk to work?

DCMidnight. . .I get that DC metro is pretty much straight trash, but you know what it's better than. . .every city that doesn't have a metro.

You know what comes up if you google "Raleigh subway". . . a list of places to get a five dollar footlong.

Metro works well if you don't live where DCM lives or work where DCM works or commute at the insane times DCM does.

Id say metro has less delays than driving, and far less severe delays. A few weeks ago a train derailed and it was about 45-60 min delay. When driving Ive had many delays longer than that because of accidents on my route. The difference is that the Metro accident makes the front page amd everyone blames them, vs a car accident that may get a brief blurb on WTOP traffic reports.

Metro is by far the better option to driving if you are in the core DC area. I mostly metro but drive regularly to places where driving can save me 30 minutes (not downtown).

They're not going to force you to work there.

I would see this as a net positive in the region. NET. Not saying that there wouldn't be some drawbacks but if you want to go to a place where people take it easy, the population is aging, young people are leaving, the tax base is shrinking, and Doritos are considered a little "exotic", I'd recommend a couple weeks in Maine.

Let's get a different work force in here instead of more DC (the city not the person) prototypes. We all saw how much nicer it got when Bangas left.

lulz DC. As a native Seattleite millennial who lived in DC for a decade, I can't begin to unpack the degree to which you are missing the nuance here.

Yes. I walked to work for a long time. My wife walks to work now. A lot of people who work downtown walk to work. Young people. The type of people Amazon says they want to hire.

When I say "DC", I don't mean anything outside of the actual District of Columbia

My uncle was trying to make the case for Brunswick Maine being a great place for Amazon HQ. He was citing the Naval Air Station there as a benefit for them flying in and out executives and products. What is he thinking. . ."oh, I just got a computer science degree in a beautiful metropolitan area. I'm going to move to Brunswick Maine."

He has literally no idea what the world is like outside of Maine and Florida.

Amazon would octuple the amount of tech jobs in Maine (made up multiplier for effect). I love Maine so much for what it is, but it is from a different era and it is NOT getting better. Tourism and trees. That's it. Used to also be shoes and ice. Jobs are coming back to Maine when we need to start harvesting ice from rivers again.
