Playing in my first charity outting Monday, what to expect?

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this is the right sub forum, please move if need be.

So Monday I am playing in a charity event held by Boys & Girls club. It's at a very nice country club and had a fairly high price tag to attend. What should I expect play to be like? Is it going to be a bunch of guys who are scratch or better, or a lot of people who just got in because their CEO is a member and they've never swung a club in their life?

Is it just kind of a friendly mess around time or do people stay pretty serious and play for money? I want to have fun but I'm nervous about what to expect. I'm a 20 cap and generally play county courses, I don't want to feel too out of place.

It will likely be a scramble and will likely take a long time. They will also likely be looking for other ways to get you to make contributions.

I have never been to one where there wasn't a wide range of playing abilities. Friendly, long mess. You will be fine. Enjoy and contribute. It's more about the charity than the golf.

Anything like that I've ever played in has mostly been terrible golfers mixed in with a few who are really good (most often members of the hosting course who happen to own businesses that are sponsoring the event)

Even the really good golfers are just out there to enjoy the day though, at least in my experience at this type of event. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just go out and have fun.

Yeah I plan to buy the $100 raffle package, too.

Ah scramble play.... I see. No clue if there will be a "winner" but I suspect the winning team score will be something like 14 under if that's the case.

Throw in eating crappy buffet food and trying not to fall asleep while 800 raffle items are called out, and you've got yourself a charity golf tournament.

14 under won't sniff 3rd in most charity scrambles. The pencil always wins. Eat, drink, socialize and enjoy the day for what it is: a charitable contribution to a good cause that comes with a round of golf and some booze.

This literally sounds like what my friend who is organizing the event said it will be.

He's like, "show up at 9am to warm up.. gonna be a long a** day".

Do they tend to take cash/check only?? I'm a wimpy little millennial, I tend to pay with plastic and cell phone 9.99999/10.

Dang S&G... sounds like you've given enough to charity already to last you the rest of your life. Hope it didn't intrude on you much, probably should just stay home and drink the next time huh?

You should feel at home there.

Although there would be some low index golfers in the charity events, most are there because of "the charitable contribution" and "networking"/

A good time to make new friends there and have a great time.

I didn't even think of the networking.... I'll bring a few business cards.

Speaking of 20 cap, I just shot a 36 on my local par 4 lol. 31 rating... guess I got lucky.. made eagle on #8.

You sand- bagger , you...... LOL

That won't count as long as you don't repeat this level of scoring often. Normally they'll average and toss out the best and the worst scores in the latest 20 rounds within a 12 month period.

Networking, definitely.

You will meet some nice people, for sure. Just do some homework before hands of who is who behind the tournament. Most of all, have some fun doing it.

Trust me, it's an eaaaassssyy 9 holes. Last week shot a 40, which is about my norm there.

Just realized all my cards are in my office, and I won't be going in before the event. Looks like I'll be taking cards instead of giving.

I went probably 10-12 years when the kids were younger where the only time I picked up the clubs was for fundraising tournaments for their various sports leagues, one of which I was president of for 10 years. I go to these things with the attitude that I'm going to get sloppy drunk with my buddies, drop some cash, and have a blast. If my post made it sound like I don't enjoy them, I did that wrong. I love playing in them. And I've never come close to sniffing first place in one.

You'll most likely be able to pay your entry fee with plastic, but all the raffles, on course props, etc. will be cash. Think of it like going to the casino - bring in cash what you've decided your spending limit is for the day, and leave the plastic behind. The more freely the liquor flows, and the more fun you start having, the more freely the cash flows as well.

LOL. I LITERALLY typed this post on my phone while waiting for the "rules" announcement before a charity tournament.

I had fun.

I have a hangover today

It was for a good cause

I putted really well

We tied for 1st with several other teams

I swear I don't remember cheating. :)

I had a taco afterwards but skipped the raffle and went to dinner at a nice steak house.
