TaylorMade P790 different hosel?

Hi,

 

I was told from a friend, that the reason why TaylorMade doesn’t offer a wide range of graphite shafts to their P790 iron (2-3 iron) is because the hosel is different so not many shafts would fit in? You need to be a Tour Pro before they will tweak it for you? Is that correct?

 

I find it strange that Titleist got so many graphite options for their 718 T-MB when TaylorMade doesn’t? But maybe this can explain why?

 

I would love a P790 in 3 iron with a HZRDUS Black or Tensei White Hybrid shaft, but it doens’t looks like possible as for the 718 T-MB.

 

Anyone who can confirm?

I think your friend is referring to tip size of the various shafts. The P790’s take a .355 tip iron shaft. The .355 tipped shafts are discreet/constant weight meaning all shafts weigh the same and are build at half inch increments and are cut to length from the butt. The other normal tip size is .370 and the shafts are one length and weight and cut from the tip.

I know it's a .355 tip, but I'm wondering how Titleist can offer so many different graphite shaft options, because I believe their 718 T-MB is also a .355 tip? Or am I wrong?

Likely because Titleist has taken the effort to get .355 tp versions of shafts from the shaft manufacturers that are normally only available to the public as .370 shafts or doesn't have a problem making the conversion themselves in the factory. It's actually very easy to do the conversion but it does complicate the club OEM's inventory management so they don't always want to take on that extra burden.

 

And that's just the tip size. Allowing hybrid shafts in an iron makes the ordering process even more complicated (for them) since it's really only a valid choice in the longer irons which makes the software a bit more complicated if the valid shaft choice lists changes from iron to iron.

If you look at Mitsubishi homepage, you will see that e.g. Tensei shaft is .355 tip http://www.mca-golf.com/products/ck-white

And TaylorMade do offer this shaft for their driver and fairways, but it doesn't seems to that they want to offer this shaft for their irons and htbrids.

 

What a shame. Titleist is just better in that case.

That's a link to a .335 wood shaft (not .355 iron/hybrid). No one is going to put a wood shaft into an iron or hybrid. That would cause many more problems then just the tip being the wrong size.

Yes exactly, so Titleist must order somethinig different from Mitsubishi, since they can offer .370 shafts and TaylorMade can't.

Most .370 shafts can be shaved to .355. Maybe Titleist is willing to do this but Taylormade doesn't want to bother due to low demand?

I put a Fujikura Atmos Blue HB 8x into a P790, just needed to prep the tip correctly. As it's been said, there is no reason that it can't be don't, it just requires a bit more effort in the building process. You really should know what you're doing when you attempt this as well, it would be easy for a less knowledgeable/skilled person to really screw it up (which is the likely reason that TM isn't offering this from the factory).

I doubt that's it. A factory environment would use dedicated machine that even a monkey could use w/o screwing up.
