Doug Ford passed, he was 95.

Recommended Posts

JP only knew who Doug Ford was because his first driver was a Doug Ford hardwood that he used as a 10 year old until he was like 14. Its head was tiny by today’s standards, all the niceness was well worn off. It had a steel shaft and it was too long for Jack initially but he grew into it. The grip was like rock, as he got it from his father and lord knows how old it was? He remembers rescrewing down the screws on the face. Tried to put some stain on it at one point. But the Doug Ford name decal remained. Doug Ford was a Masters champion and played great golf for a long time. He also is a memory, a tie in to Jack’s father and the game we both love. Thanks Doug, thank you very much. RIP.

One of the Best Golf Tips I've ever learned, I got from reading "Getting Started in Golf," by Doug Ford (I think that was the title). I had been playing a couple of years, but in those days we read everything about golf we could get our hands on. Wasn't putting so great, so Ford's tip resonated:

Grip the putter using the same grip as the 13 other clubs. The game of golf is complicated enough without adding to it.

I've done that for about 48 of the 50 years I've been committed to the game. Can't say that I was a Great Putter, but I was always well above average.

I sit home and watch today's Gurus with their triple reverse bifurcated claw grips, and laugh my nads off!

Thank you Doug Ford, You will be Missed, RIP.

You know I always did that in gripping the putter just like I did the 13 other clubs--- Got away from that for some reason and got streaky even using the claw grip--- Went back to doing just that along with putting with an old blade style putter. Got my feel back. That was something my old man and all the old time pros I was around taught. I know my old man knew Mr Ford but I never met him myself. I do know one time he was on TV and my old man said "Now that is one hell of a putter that Doug Ford"

Bobby Locke was of the same opinion and used his normal grip for putting...he wasn't too bad...

I've heard it mentioned a few times in books that he was a great wedge player.

I'm looking at an edition of Golfer's Digest, Vol 2, Deluxe Edition from 1967. It has a treasure trove of finely written articles edited by John May (who remembers him?).

One of the features by Doug Ford is entitled '' Pitch, Punch and Cut...Triple threat for low scoring golf.. All three fo these speciality shots may be made with the fairway wedge, the club that experts and average golfers use to 'save ' strokes.''

Doug Ford, Short Game Expert and communicator, RIP.

Yep I’ve got the set of those. They seem to be a compilation of all the best articles from the different mags for the year. Either a great example of collaboration that would be great today or maybe golf digest, golf and golf world were co-owned. Sports Illustrated had lots of golf too.
