There will be a flood of driving irons for sale soon when people realize that their hybrids are easier to hit and are more forgiving. I can't wait.

... While this may be true for the majority of the people that play golf, many of todays DI's are equally as forgiving when it comes to slight mishits. Yes, you need the technique and club head speed to make a DI work for you, but a lot of better players are more accurate with a DI vs a wood like hybrid and most importantly have more confidence in an iron. Years ago you had no choice as low lofted irons were thin, narrow soled and very unforgiving or wide soled high launching SGI's that were equally ill fit for the better player. But graphite shafts, hollow/foam filled heads in lower lofts have created a new iron the many better players are using very effectively. But I get your point and of course there will be those that should not be using a DI and classified sales will be aplenty.

That’s the thing, you need the clubhead speed to make it work, and looking at most people playing at my course, that’s a small percentage of players.

I think if people went through the process of getting a correct shaft it helps too. The hzrdus 85 that comes in the P790 is not super stout, but much tougher to elevate for most. For me, it's the perfect mid flight/anti left shaft, but for my friend who is just as good of a player and ball striker.. He was better suited with the GD DI 85 (non hybrid) shaft. It was night and day for him.

I agree that the P790 and most of the newer Drivin lrons have much more forgiving heads, but people want this ultra low spin, low launch, roll for days club.. Which is truly a niche market that can play that. If you treat it as a normal club and have a correct fit, they can be beneficial.

Just my experience but my p790 2 iron UDI beat out hybrids by a wide margin and surprisingly beat out my 5 wood...

My prediction is that all these guys who rave about their driving irons are going to be falling in love with their sets' 2- and 3-irons again in a few short years. My guess is that they'll "rediscover" those clubs and report how happy they are to realize they're actually good enough to hit "real" long irons. That's what happened to me. I started off with a driving iron and ultimately went back after finding that distance is more or less the same and it's actually advantageous to have all your clubs match.

Just my theory.

It's ironic you mention this. I've had a Ping Eye 2+ 2I for like 15 years. It has the original KT-M shaft in it. Great versatile club. In the past 2 years I've tried a Ping Rapture DI, Titleist T-MB, Srixon U45 Mizuno MP-H5. All with different kinds of shafts from DGS300 to 100g lightweight graphite and steel. None of them I hit any better than the Eye2 and I didn't see that much distance gains with them. I went out today with the Ping and was just repeatedly striping it and the mishits weren't that bad.

Granted it's not the same iron as the rest of my set, but it fits in with the notion of not needing a "special" club as your 2iron.

I bought one this season because I've never really gotten on with a Hybrid - even one that I was fitted for, and it's main purpose is for using off the tee.

Srixon U65 20 degree - HZRDUS BLK 105g

I'm happy with it so far, although I may get it bent 1-2 degress stronger as it hits it a little higher than I'd like.

I think they are way easier to hit and launch than even old school long irons so the fear is not there.

However, we are in a golfwrx bubble so those on those sight are more inclined to try new things we read about. Out on the course, still pretty unusual

I have a long love affair with 2 irons and have just recently gone the way of the 19' hybrid. Man are those easy to hit

This thread makes me want to reshaft my U45 with something longer and stiffer
yeah me too. But i have no idea with what!

Mine came with a Nippon NS pro 950 or 980 and it just feels flimsy the head feels a bit light.

I'm hoping to get a cheaper hybrid shaft at Golf Town where they're having a sale and just build it up. But my local one doesn't have a lot of shafts to choose from...

but i like the balance of my h45 hybrid, so maybe a 70-80 gram hybrid shaft
