Dallas courses over Labor Day

sub150

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, looking for some course recs for 6 guys over Labor Day weekend. Will be in town for UM-LSU football game and looking to play Sat afternoon, Sun morning, and Monday. Under $300 for 3 rounds would be preferable. Looking for something relatively open.

We are going to be staying near downtown Dallas

My list so far is

  1. Tierra Verde Golf Club (Arlington, $60-$70)
  2. Texas Star Golf Course (Euless, $60-$80)
  3. Bridlewood (Flower Mound, )
  4. Cowboys Golf Club
  5. Heritage Ranch Golf & CC
  6. Wildhorse Golf Club of Robson Ranch (Denton,
  7. Golf Club of Fossil Creek (Fort Worth) too far away?

Thoughts on this and rankings?

If you are staying near downtown Dallas, all of those courses will be quite a drive; 30+ minutes to every single one of them. If you are looking to keep the three round total under $300, I would strike Cowboys it's ~$200 and not worth it at all in my opinion. If I would recommend a schedule I would go:

Saturday afternoon: Waterchase Golf Club (~$65 and 5 minutes from Jerry World, some of the best public bermuda greens you will find)

Sunday morning: Tierra Verde (~$80 and around 45 minutes from downtown Dallas)

Monday: Old American Golf Club (~$125 my favorite public course in the area by far and about 45 minutes from downtown Dallas)

Unlike most people on here I'm not a fan of Texas Star (even though I have won 3 tournaments out there) but you could put it in place of Tierra if you prefer

I agree, actually playing there tomorrow. Coming from downtown Dallas, Sky Creek will be a huge pain to get to since it's not near any major freeway. I live under 10 miles from there and it still takes me 30 minutes in no traffic to get there and I would say over an hour from downtown Dallas. Still a great track

Here's a few suggestions that can save you some $$$.

First off, there really aren't any "bad courses" in DFW.

You'll hear the usual Cowboys, Texas Star, Old American, etc.. All good courses and all quite expensive.

I'd suggest:

Fossil Creek

Tennison Park

Webb Hill (worth the 45 minute trip)

Buffalo Creek

and maybe play one of the above referenced high dollar courses if you like.

And have dinner one night at Razzoo's and breakfast at The Original Pancake House.

Enjoy

From your list, I have only played Heritage Ranch, Bridlewood, and Cowboys. Just my opinion, but Bridlewood and Heritage Ranch are both well worth playing while Cowboys wasn't for what you pay. However, it will be quite a drive to Bridlewood and about 30+ minutes or so to Heritage Ranch.

Cedar Crest, Stevens Park, and Tenison Park will be the closest to downtown Dallas. Cedar Crest has some history to it as they played the PGA there back in the 1920's. I have played them all but it was at least 30 years ago so I have no idea what conditions you would find. Do keep in mind that you will not be in the best part of Dallas especially when playing Cedar Crest. Don't know how true they are but I have heard stories of on-course robberies of players at Cedar Crest.

Thanks for the info guys. Will do some more research this weekend.

Lol at being robbed on a course. Honestly adds some intrigue.

Didn't realize how spread out these places were. In Phoenix I'm used to most courses being within 20-30 minutes.

The reason it seems like it is spread out is because you are staying in downtown Dallas. If you stayed in Arlington or more central you would cut the driving time to under 15 minutes to a lot of the courses mentioned.

Sky Creek Ranch I would say yay or nay depending on the skill of players. That course imo is very penal and requires a lot of precision. 15 20 cap might not enjoy it. Last time I played out there I cursed the name of Robert Trent Jones.

Tribute is also a good track links style well worth the play since they redid the greens. Across the street from Old American in the colony. The Bridges at firewheel Stevens park and tension highlands are three other slightly closer options.

We are definitely going to do Stevens and Cedar Crest. I may get two more rounds in pending on amount of beer and wine drank.

The general theory is closer is cheaper and less challenging, with a bit of decrease in course quality. Further away, the nicer the course, the more challenging, and the pricier. I may have a round at Trinity Forest as well.

Thanks for all the info. May be moving out here in June anyways.

Tenison for sure but Tenison Highlands, not Tension Glen.

Stevens Park as already mentioned.

Cedar Crest course was struggling earlier in the summer with our heatwave but hopefully it will be in fine shape by Labor Day

Check our Riverside in Grand Prairie

The Tribute (wide open) is a top 3 Dallas course for me

Married to Callaway Clubs but I cheat with Nike Clubs on occasion.

Sky Creek Ranch forgot to turn the water on st their course so it’s verrrrry dry and firm right now. I’d avoid it honestly. Stevens Park is fun and very unique. Pecan Hollow in Plano is a great track as is Sherril Park #1. Tenison Highlands is hit or miss for me but it can be enjoyable. Fossil Trace is great but obviously in Ft Worth. Basically, mirror what most everyone else said.

We ended up only playing Stevens Park and T highland. Highland was on Monday so got some rain and the greens were recently punched. Practice green was great and no green was even close to it. Stevens Park was in good shape.

I walked Highland...finishing stretch was pretty fun. For our group they were good courses. Able to play as a fivesome once we left the first hole and keep up easily so that was great.

Not a fan of all the trees but unless you can get on Trinity Forest it seems like the norm out in Dallas. 15 on Highland (par 4 down the hill) had a tree guarding the flag in the back left which to me is a little stupid.
