MD/DC/VA Golfers - Twelve Monkeys Mental Divergence

Yup. My favorite thing to do in winter is to throw 2 or 3 beers in the bag on a weekend afternoon and hit the dog track just down the street for 9 (or 12 or 15) with 6 or 7 clubs. Even better when its 38*-40* as I have the course to myself. I'll probably get in 10-12 of those rounds between now and March.

DON'T TALK ABOUT BRAMBLETON LIKE THAT

Ha. Not Brambleton. Jefferson District Park.

Are we talking about the organic, artisan, gluten-free, sustainable, free-range, handcrafted carry bags that are becoming all the rage among social media golfers? To each their own, but I'm not snapping off $400-$1,000 for one of those things. They're just customizable, luxury Sunday bags. You can spend $100 or less for a PING Moonlite, and get a lighter, more functional bag.

Those are for the posers who buy them only because they want to put pictures of them on instagram. There's no chance anyone has ever bought one of those bags and hasn't posted a picture of it.

"Bro, quality"

Stop it. You just want people to know you spend a lot of money on things.

GTT: USGA has changed the rules and now 14 clubs is a thing of the past. Welcome to the new era - 11 clubs max. What's even crazier is that USGA is now limiting you to five items in your bag. For the sake of simplicity, a dozen balls constitutes a single item, but six balls doesnt count as half an item.

Whats in your bag?

for me:

subtract the 5w, the 5i, the 50° and the 56. boom. i think i can hit partial 3ws and 4h to cover that gap, and i'm not good from those distances anyway.

thinking harder: i could probably take out the 8 or 9 as well with very little loss in efficiency.

5 items:

-bag of tees

-duzz

-flask

-glove

-laser

TEE XCG4 3w 15°
Cobra BioCell 3h
Titleist AP3 4-GW

GTT: I could very likely remove the 60*, 5i, 3w, and one of my hybrids from my bag without any real detriment to my score. I've probably lost more shots than I've gained with my 3w/5i anyway, so my score might go up.

I have that mini Nike practice bag that I basically only use at the 7s. Smaller than a Sunday bag even. Unlike most Sunday bags though, it doesn't have legs, so I don't use it much. It's also tough to get clubs in/out at times.

Outside of the 7s, I don't think I've carried my bag in the last 3 years. That's kind of the problem with the ClicGear bag in that you can't carry it well. The only time it really bit me was when we were at Bulle Rock a few years ago and you couldn't use Clics. I would have carried if I could. I'm thinking of switching back to a normal stand bag just to open the carry option back up.

GTT: I'd drop my 4w, 7w, 4i and replace it with a 5w. Then the last removal is tougher. I'd like to remove a mid iron and just bend the clubs around it. Doesn't matter too much which one. Maybe remove 9i, make the 8i weaker and PW stronger by a degree or two each.

Balls

Tees

Ball Mark

Repair tool

Pepper spray for when I encounter anyone who uses the word 'duzz'.

Dozen balls

Rangefinder

6 pack

Everything else you can either keep in your car and carry in your pocket (marker, divot repair tool, tees) or apply beforehand (suntan lotion, sunglasses). It's actually pretty instructive how much crap (gorilla pod, rain cover, extra gloves) I keep in my bag.

I had a huge post typed up responding to 2MoreTerps and DC where I quoted David Foster Wallace and told 2MoreTerps that unarticulated was indeed a word and I re-iterated all the things I've said over the years about Adam Young, and then I lost it. Here's a less articulate version.

The gist of it was that I don't think 2More was poo-poo'ing trackman.

He was trying to make the distinction between trying to hit the ball better through mechanics, compared to focusing on the target and being athletic.

No one who plays basketball is spending more time on making sure their elbow is in the correct orientation when they shoot a jumper than they are shooting jumpers (well, maybe Markelle is, and that's probably his problem). It doesn't mean mechanics aren't important. You don't want to teach a kid to shoot like Shawn Marion, but I think Steph Curry got a lot more out of shooting from 3/4 court, behind the backboard, from the exit ramp etc etc than he ever did from making sure his elbow was at the right angle at P2. If he was a golfer (well he is, but you get it), people would be going, "when are you ever going to have to dribble two basketballs at once in a real game?"

OK, this was the David Foster Wallace part. . .

I was making a distinction between guys who want to approach fixing your issues the Adam Young way, by changing your intention at the ball and hoping that something good comes along for the ride in the golf swing AND guys fixing an issue by actually trying to fix something in the swing and hope it translates into a proper fix at the ball.

It's like when you tell a guy who is shanking the ball, "try hitting it closer to the toe" and the response is, "what's that going to do?" EVERYBODY has been in that mind space. It's the foundation of the Golf Instruction Industrial Complextm It's so prevalent that I don't even think that people realize that it's really just one of several paradigms and not the actual truth (DFW part) : "There are these two young fish swimming along, and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says, "Morning, boys, how's the water?" And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes, "What the hell is water?"

There's this idea that golf is best improved by reducing a player's deviations from an idealized golf swing. THIS was the purpose of 2MoreTerp's garage cuts last winter. This was why he was driving himself crazy with his laid off look and why he had videos of himself and Abb and an instructor in his garage (sexy, sexy videos).

Rough discussion on the course last year, "why can't you be laid off?"

"Look at this divot. The toe is deeper than the heel."

"Why is that a result of being laid off?"

"....."

So, he stops being laid off through video analysis and garage cuts, and what does this do for his game? I don't know. Nothing? Ask him. Nothing to my eyes.

I think people are scared to leave the water. . .like it's a concession that they're done improving their swing. At some point, Steph Curry stopped thinking about where his elbow was in his jumpshot. 2More is -- I think -- just saying he's going to try a new approach for now.

Discuss.

I like Eagle's method. . .

tap the mark a little with your putter and then tap tap tap tap tap (someone's putting) tap tap tap tap tap tap tamp tamp tamp tamp tamp tamp pound pound pound until you've reworked the earth enough that the entire area around the ball mark has been regraded. I've actually felt the earth vibrate a little while he was repairing a ball mark.
