Wilson Staff Midsize

I had some Wilson Staff Progressives slightly before these were made, but I cannot imagine the specs are too far off for most of their irons. That being said I did find this.

I believe these are the forged counter part to those irons. I could be wrong, hope this helps. The toe on those irons and most of the irons from Wilson in the early 90's was phenomenal, and I sincerely wish I could find irons that had this profile today.

According to Ironfinder, the Staff Midsize were from 95 to 97. This was during the oversized iron phase in golf equipment, which saw most companies creating larger clubheads in an effort to push the forgiveness angle, and tout "oversized" in the description. Without seeing these and comparing them, I'd guess they're not quite oversized? LOL

Reviews of them might be hard to find. The intarwebs were barely getting their start, there could have been info on them on the rec.sport.golf newsgroup in the Usenet world, or perhaps on the Golfonline Equipment Forum, the ancestor of all golf forums, but I have my doubts any of that remains anywhere.

The Staff RM Midsize were noticeably bigger than the Progressive. The lofts also were stronger (a 24 degree 4-iron / 47 degree PW is "normal" for me, although I guess even these were lofts that had started to creep up).

I forget where the Progressive switched to a blade. I believe Mizuno also had a forged cavity to blade set in the mid-90s or so (also can't recall what club switched designs). Interesting that these sets never made it but the combo set is back and all the rage these days...

Progressives switched to blade at 8-iron...I played a set 2-SW for 12 years (remember when you used to get 10 irons in a set?!?). Seamless change between CBs/MBs but the cavity was only just a cavity and didn’t really offer any additional forgiveness over the blades. Great clubs though.

I played those Staff Midsized for a while when they were current. 5 iron was 28 degrees and PW was 48. Nice clubs. 17-4 stainless and sharp edge grooves that would shave the cover of balls.

I played these. One of my favorite set of clubs. Had a nice feel for stainless. Remember it being a nice thunk when hit well.

Well I pulled the trigger and picked up a set of these (4-SW) for the monumental sum of $20 with the graphite Firestick 4.5 (senior) shafts. As this was a garage purchase I didn’t notice that the clubs had been cut down over an inch. My daughter (5’) tried them but didn’t want to bag them. So I extended the shafts an inch and have been hitting them for about a week. So far I am very impressed. The shafts don’t seem overly weak, and I hit them almost as far as the SGI irons that I tend to fall back on. Surprising considering the assumed weaker lofts. The main thing I like is that the traditional look (although in a larger head) allows me to set the club squarely which improves accuracy. My SGIs are so rounded looking throughout the set, that I struggle to tell when the are set square. They’ll remain in the bag for a while for sure.

I had these back in the mid90s. I think they were the first set of new irons I ever owned. During quarantine I was digging through old clubs and found my 2 iron, which was my go-to tee club back then. I put it into the bag just for kicks and the thing is amazing, I've loved hitting stingers again. Every time I hit it, the guys I'm with have a comment. Who knows the loft of it, but I've hit several low bullets that fun out to 230-240 yards, which isn't much shorter than I hit driver at times. I'm playing in a state qualifier in two weeks, but I realized that this is pre-groove rule, which is why I was googling it. I hoped maybe the rules didn't apply on long irons but sadly they do. I think this sucker would have been a big help as a tournament fairway finder. Now I need to decide how to fill the gap between 3W and 4 iron.

A buddy bought those brand new when they came out. He still plays them and still kicks my butt.

That 2 iron should be 19 degrees. Compared to modern SGI irons these things are pretty small. More Ping i-series size, not G series size. Think I might have one of these heads in the garage somewhere. Might have to take a look...
