I know these irons have a poor MPF score due to the high center of gravity. Does anyone else think these clubs feel awful when hit high on the face, above the COG? Right now I can only speak to the 3 iron I've had bent to 16*. It feels better off the turf than teed up. Still adjusting to these from 710 AP2's, feels great when hit in the screws.

Awful? No. Depends upon how high you're talking about though. Since you're meant to strike irons low, I find when I hit in the middle.of the face - it feels more like an hybrid or wood. Just kind of pops off the face. Shots struck lower on the face feel like just about any other iron I've hit. I suppose it would bee off the tee or fluffy lie you'd hit "high" on the face.

I've also noticed that the shot struck like a "normal" iron low on the face has a consistent distance. But when you tee it up or have a fluffly lie and hit more in the "middle" of the face the ball flies farther and higher. I'd assume more related to spin but the spring effect is real. So when I have a 185 tee shot I use my 180 club and tee it up a little to get the distance I need.

yes I agree with the hollow feeling. Something new to me, I’ve been a 10 year PX player so feel is going to be different. I will say the mishits are much better than mishits with my udi 1 iron. I am looking forward to receiving the rest of the set. Thanks for your insight.

  • 2 months later...

hi all.

i am a recent returning golfer after around a 18 year 6 months break from playing. i used to play with a real cheap second hand set of irons (pure elite) and use donnay woods. i got down from 15 hcp to 5.5 inside a year with these clubs. this was when i was 30 years old

But after a messy divorce  and taking years to get clubs back and other health issues also  i decided to play again. im am now 50 years old an loving playing more than ever.  i bought some taylor made rbz  clubs to start again with.  i have to say they were 2nd hand and a few years old but boy can they hit the ball a long way.  wedge 150 yards with ease and plenty of control.  All the irons are long hitting clubs. they have standard shafts in them . i couldnt get on with the woods so i replace with titleist ts3 driver and 3 wood with stiff shafts and love them. great distances with comfortable 300 yard drives.

so 3 weeks ago i bought some nearly new i500 iron with medium to stiff shafts.  ball contact is good and hit the ball a whole lot straighter.  at the moment the distances are not anything like the old irons  im probably down around 10 yards or so at least. i havent been creaming them out the middle so that maybe why im loosing a little distance . but the accuracy is superb. i have only played 3 rounds so far but my opinion is they are a great looking club with excellent feel. im using prov1 balls so its not like im using a topflite stone to play with .

on the whole apart from the little distance loss so far im really impressed with them . the look fantastic and are a great weight and balance. also its a bit like returning to my junior golfing days with blades  with how they look even though they arent blades.

im a great believer of you like the look weight and feel of a club you will play better with it!!

Bought the I500, took them to the range and hit them off grass. I hated the clicky sound, not forgiving on mishits and the next day exchanged them for a set of Mizuno JPX 919 forged.

I hated the sound of the i500 as well.  I’m not normally that sensitive to sound either, but the i500 had a terrible hollow weird sound to me, had to get rid of them.

  • 2 weeks later...

i just got fitted last month.  Never was a Ping guy (Titleists for the last 12 years going from CB's to AP2's) but i was seeing loss of distance the last couple years.  Pings with KBS $-taper lites won out.   I didnt mind the sound or feel on the launch monitor and the numbers were the most consistent with increased distance while still maintaining spin.  My worry in a distance iron was not being able to control them.  So i wait for 4 weeks to get them sent to me.   First day on the range i was saying what the F did I do.  Bad.   Second day i went back out and started hitting some shots and then some really good shots.  (6 handicap @ 63 yrs old).  ok, i was feeling a little better.  Couple days later took them to the course as we had some great weather.   For the first time on the course not really knowing what to expect I was delighted.  VERY consistent distances and the feel was good enough. I knew i'd lose a bit of feel but its not like its bad or anything.  Mishits were going pretty much the exact same distance as well hit shots.  Plus gained 10-12 yards in the longer irons (4-7).  Not as much in the shorter irons .    I live up north so now i get to look at them for the long winter coming, but i think they are going to be great and they look sexy as hell i love the look in the bag.

Update after couple months:     Well as much as i wanted these to work out i just felt long term these weren't the "ones".  they performed ok (sometimes very well) but the feel just made me cringe at times.    I took my lumps on ebay and went with Apex Pros.  I wont know for awhile as its cold now but I've hit them before at demo days and all was good.  We'll see.

I had them for a short time 4-UW and didn't mind the sound/click feel.  I likely didn't give them enough time, but really felt uncomfortable with the loft changes from the 7-UW inside 160 yards coming from iblades.  I never used the 21* 4 iron.  And felt ok with the 5-7 as those were the same lofts as my previous iblade 4-6.   Sold them recently and went back to iblades to rebuild.  I might go back to 4-7 om i500 to blend with iblade.  But we'll see.
