steel shafts?

Hi all... As mentioned in other threads, I've been practising my golf for about a month now (driving range only) using a set of RH Skymax Ice IX-1 steel shafted irons (6i - SW).

I usually hit a 100 balls or so a session but notice that my fingers ache considerably the next day, especially my right hand. Also the right forearm as well.

I'm swinging the club within myself so i don't think i'm going at the ball too hard. I'm aged 37.

Perhaps it is just early days and i'll get used to it/overcome it as time goes on. Could the steel shafts have something to do with it?

Do you have to hit off astro turf mats at the range? I used to hit a lot of balls off of mats and I thought I was getting severe arthritis. Went to the doc and he told me that was not the case. I quit hitting balls off of mats and most of the pain went away. IMO praticing excessivley off of mats is not good for your game or body.

^ Thanks for replying. Yes, they have astro turf mats. Perhaps next time i'll trying hitting off a tee more often and limit myself to light swings with the wedge and see what difference that makes.

Dont know where you live but I would do my best to find a range with grass and dirt to hit off of. The only time I hit off of astro turf now is if the course I am getting ready to play has mats, and I need to hit a few warm up shots. FYI I also have cushion inserts in my Ping irons and while they do help absorb the shock, I still have issues with the shock of hitting off mats. Graphite shafts will help as well but there is no substitute for hitting balls off of what mother nature gave us.
