Apex Pro 19 5i-PW, Apex 19 4i?

Is anyone gaming a set like this? I don't want the standard combo set, but do like having a bit more sole to work with in a long iron. I know the non-Pros are stronger loft, but has anyone hit a comparison like this and seen how much longer an Apex 19 4i is from a Pro 19 5i? 15 yards? 20 yards? I plan on getting KBS C Taper S+ shafts in these.

 

My 7i carry here at altitude in CO is about 195yards for reference.

This type of set composition is very common. While the regular Apexes are stronger lofted than the pros, the regular Apex lofts get very compressed in the long irons since the pitching wedge is so strong (43* IIRC). You could probably just strengthen the pro 5 iron a degree or so and not worry about a crazy gap between that and the regular 4 iron.

I have a similar set-up but slightly different Callaway clubs. X forged 6-pw and apex CF16 5, and 4 iron. Basically the same idea, wanted some forgiveness in my long irons.

 

There is a pretty big gap in loft between my 6 iron and 5 iron (5*) and also since the cf16's are hotter/more forgiving I find that I have a larger than desired distance gap between my 6i (~190yds) and my 5i (~215). Was also thinking about bending my 6i a degree or two stronger to adjust for this.

I had a discussion last year with the Callaway rep regarding set mix on the Rogue irons family, with Rogue Pro as a base.

 

At the long end of the bag, I was wondering about what to do with 4i and maybe 5i. He said that once we had narrowed to primary shaft, the launch monitor would direct. He said that two things could emerge:

• I might best numbers with Rogue Pro 4i softstepped, or..
  
• I might get numbers with base Rogue 4i with the primary shaft.
  

People play it both ways - depends on what works for you.

 

You could probably just strengthen the pro 5 iron a degree or so and not worry about a crazy gap between that and the regular 4 iron.

 

This is normal solution to such a gap. Again, let the numbers suggest what to do.

At a certain club head speed you start losing gaps a bit in the long irons so stronger loft may help...if you can get access to a launch monitor it will help give you answers.

 

I play the Apex CF16 5iron and the Apex Pro (2016) 6/7 and the MB 8-Pw.

 

At the end of the day I bent the 8i one strong and the 5i one weak and my gaps are what I need. 8-10 yards.

I went this direction. At my swing speed the 5* gap from the pro 5 to the regular 4 just isn't that big of a deal.

I've been stuck inside on the simulator since they arrived, but from what I can tell there so far I'm going to be very happy with this setup.

You will carry 280 with that 4 iron. wow.

I carry 260 with my driver. very sad. lol
