Thinking of getting rid of my 10 year old Mizuno MX-200s...could use some advice

I am a 15 Handicap. I got fitted for the clubs about 10 years ago. The fitting wasn't all that great. The first set of irons came with dynamic gold XP shafts, and my ball-flight in my shorter irons was ridiculously high. I'll be the first to admit that was probably due to my inability to learn how to flight the ball down at the time. I ended up selling the clubs and replacing them with another set of MX-200s, but with Dynamic Gold S300 shafts. I was told that these shaft might lower my ball-flight a bit, as they are heavier. Long story short I've been playing with this setup for the last 10 years and really like these clubs. However lately when I pick them up they feel heavier than ever (I'm getting old I guess). I was in a gold store the other day and picked up a Mizuno MP-54 (stock Dynamic gold shafts). I immediately noticed how much lighter the club felt and at address, didn't look THAT much smaller or unforgiving than my MX-200s. My question would be, how much distance can you really lose (or swing speed) if you're playing with clubs/shafts that are to heavy? and ...do you think a transition from MX-200s to the MP-54s would be to big a leap? I just found mp63 with 110ish gram KBS shafts.Super lite swing weight.That suits some folk.I reshafted in dg r300 so 122 gram in regular flex. The trend is too 110 gram and down to 95 gram in steel.Suggest you play a round for reference.I have found the mp63 way easier to hit and Forgiving vs all the other older clubs i have had.Try a regular shafted set eg Wilson Bridgestone Mizuno Srixon or AP1/AP2

DG S300 are 130g shafts. Considered heavier by today's standards (but the most popular by far), and those shafts promote a low penetrating ball flight. 130 gram shafts are tour weight. 120 grams are average weight. 105 grams are considered lightweight shafts, and 95 gram ultra-light. Add to that that the XP-95's promote a high trajectory (that you were seeing in your short irons).

Playabilty factor for the two irons are negligible, with the 54's a "hair" more "playable" at 428 points vs. 419 for the 200's. You probably wouldn't notice a difference.

Head weight is also negligible, with the 54's at 260 grams vs. 261.5 grams for the 200's.With the same DG shafts, both sets should feel the same. You are very in tune with your game if you can notice a 1.5 gram difference. :smile:

Heavier shafts will give you more control, at the sacrifice of speed. You have a 10 year history of the swing weight you're used to. I would guess being a lifetime Mizzy player it's D2-D3. I would suggest only stepping down one weight class. Just switched from MP-37's with Rifle shafts to MP-5's with KBS C-Tapers. Had to increase the length +1/2" from standard to keep my swing weights the same. The KBS are 120g shafts. Keep that in mind when looking for lighter shafts.

MX200 are some of the best irons I have ever played. I took the blue badge out of mine. Irons were great feeling, forgiving, and a pure pleasure to hit. Its one of those irons I wish I had never sold - would love to take them out once in awhile to play.

I played the 54s and find the JPX 900 forged superior in every way. Distance, forgiveness and looks. 900 forged dont feel as buttery but have more of a powerful springy feel off the face which I really like. The 54s were not forgiving and the short irons were very unattractive to my eye. Also, I felt they launched way to high. Definitely try the 900s before you buy a set of 54s.

As a 15 handicap, may want to try out the 919 HM's as well. I love mine and have the added forgiveness I need as a mid handicap.

I'd do jpx 919 forged or hot metal pro. The mx200 were awesome. Got my closest ever to a hole in one with them.

Definitely try 919 forged and Hot Metal Pro. The mx200s have less offset than GI clubs, like the the 919 hot metal std, so the forged and HMPs are closer to what you’re used to. Both should add distance compared to your 200s with the HMP about 5 yards longer than the forged.
