GOLF NETS! why arent more people using them?!

I always see these nets on the floor under the glove sections literally collecting dust. 3 days ago I finally decided to buy one and im thinking, this is a such a great tool for the serious golfer! I just set it up in my backyard and i must admit i do use blades so i get told how im hitting them quite effectively. To stop my grass getting chopped i also bought a hitting mat. My question is, since you can get good nets easily for under a hundred bucks, why arent people who want to seriously improve not buying them?

The net doesn't tell you anything about ball flight.

The swing that felt good might be a giant hook but since it's only going 3 feet you'll never know.

Agree here! I have been re-thinking in order to fgure out a way to keep loose for 5 months. Maybe it would be good to have one for half and three quarter shots, just to keep up and hit some balls over the winter. I don't think i would hit any full shots, i could groove a nasty hook, thinking i am smashing it

I have yet to find a net that my shots don't tear through. I have had 4 of them and none has lasted past a couple of hours. I am planning to spend the money for the heavier duty netting that is more expensive and set it up in my garage with a hitting mat and a simulator (Dancin' Dogg) so I can hit balls all winter and know what type of ball flight I would have created if the ball flew out.

Because they do more harm than good. You will hit hundreds of balls into a net, grooving a bad swing because you can't see ball flight, then realize what happened then next time you play.

I think this is the case. I just took down my cage and I'm debating putting it back up. I literally hit 100's (maybe 1000's) of balls a week. It feels and sounds really good in the cage but when I get on the course or to the range and the let the ball get down the course - well it's not as great as I'd been thinking it was....

You have one VERY understanding wife.

Na, it keeps me at home which she prefers. It took her a while to get use to sitting on the back porch while I was hitting. There's a baffle net in front of the back netting of the cage so it's pretty safe to be behind the cage (3' from the net.) I've probably hit 15,000 or more golf balls into this cage and my buddies hit another couple thousand. My stepson pitches and hits off of a tee into the cage. No tears, no rips, no broken windows, no balls in the neighbors yard(s) although one driver crown was broken when it extended into one of the poles. There's 1/2 foam padding under the outdoor carpet to keep the balls from bouncing around. The actual fun part you can't see in this picture. Simply turn 180degrees on the mat and hit pitches at the pool floats in the pool - it's like the ultimate island green!

I have one (homemade) and I enjoy having the possibility of going out and hitting few shots now and then, especially during winter. I also use it to partial shots as well as chipping of which ball flights can be irrelavant anyway. I also use it to record my swing while practicing and analyse my fundamentals afterwards.

I suggest everybody at go and buy yourself a fishing net (can be found very cheap) which is very sturdy and lost lasting and set it up to stay sharp ;)

That's what I'm affraid of, I just bought a net this weekend but I don't want to practice a bad swing. My problem is more hitting the ball fat than it is hitting it straight so maybe it won't do me that much harm, I hope.

I agree 1000 percent. The PGA pro at one of my home courses thinks these types of nets may very well be the worst golf invention ever. Many a bad swings have been honed on one of those.

The playing pro at my course grooved his swing all winter in an indoor simulator (supposedly a marked improvement from the net only setup) only to come back in the spring with a two way miss. This was one of the best pros in our PGA section for many years that had played a clutch fade his whole life. One winter pounding balls into a net (even one with "feedback" through trackman, etc.) and he was done for the summer.

That's why I go to the range up the road to hit balls from the heated stalls. It can get a little cold, so warming up takes a while and can't be rushed, but at least I know when I've hit a slight draw or fade for real.

Cheers,

Tim

I think they are good for beginners to practice making solid ball contact. You gotta worry about getting the ball in the air consistently before you care which way it goes. Past that point it can start to be bad news.

Definitely agree, there is utility to a point. I'd say it is better for anyone that can predictably hit the ball solid to just work on their physical fitness, practice putting, and generally take some time away from the game. Alternatively, a net would not be a bad place to work out with one of the heavy clubs or the medicus tool.

I think a net can be an extremely useful tool when working on your swing. IMO, you absolutely need to take video when using a net so you can avoid grooving swing flaws.

If anyone is thinking about getting a net, make sure you get a double layer one. The best ones, IMO, have a frame of netting with another layer hanging in front. If you ever wear out the front layer, you can replace just that one and save a lot of dough. You'll also avoid having balls fly through your net.

i think nets might be useful to grove in a swing in which you make solid CENTER contact with your irons and woods.

but don't let this replace a real golf range in which you could see what the ball is doing.

so think of practicing with nets as a way of practicing for the range. i know i would hate to spend half of my range bucket trying to strike to ball in the center of my irons.

  • 4 months later...

Even the really cheap nets will last a VERY LONG TIME if you hang a towel or something similar and heavy on the back of the net at the point of impact to prevent the net from stretching way out as it catches the golf ball. The towel will absorb a lot of the force of the shot and prevent the net from getting overstressed and ripping.
