The best state for golf is in the zone, caught up in the flow, not thinking about the score or swing thoughts, just being. NA NA NA NA NA. Or Arizona, depending on what you mean by 'state'.

South Carolina? I have never played in North Carolina but I would have to imagine that it would be about the same as just over Pedro's line. Unfortunately I live in Maryland where courses are open year round, but it can get quite nasty and cold in the winter. You can still play though, but man that is tough to explain to the wife why it is still fun to play in weather that is under 40 plus windchill.

I have to say North Carolina. I live in Fayetteville which is about 45 minutes from the massive amounts of course in Pinehurst/Southern Pines and Aberdeen. I have 10 courses from just around here in Fayetteville in my Sky Caddie. Fort Bragg alone has 3 courses (2 on Bragg and 1 on Pope AFB). The prices range from $18 on the weekday for a quality course (with cart) to close to $40. On weekends you can expect to pay anywhere from $30 to $45 here in Fayetteville (with cart). The stuff in the Pinehurst area goes from $40 to higher. Tere are some quality courses in Raleigh too. I played this afternoon for $22 for 18 holes.

It goes without saying that I can golf all year round here too. While you can do the same in places like Arizone and Las Vegas, It doesn't get into the triple digits heat like ti does out there. Dry heat my azz!

Don't laugh but Iowa isn't too bad when it comes to golf. Iowan's love our golf and we've got some great courses in the state.

Tournament Club of Iowa - Arnold Palmer design

The Harvester - in the top 100 you can play for the past couple years

Blue Top Ride - Rees Jones design. Longest par 5 in the state at 665yds and application has been accepted to host a Ryder Cup once the course matures enough and the casino adds more rooms to support the additional crowds. they are going after a US Open next! I've never played it yet but this information did come from the club pro. They will also have a Titleist Performance Inst with all the state of the art fitting equipment and the club pro helped write the titleist fitting book.

For those who don't know this course is located in Riverside IA where is Riverside IA you ask? We'll it's located in the eastern part of the state just south of Iowa City it's claim to fame is begin the future berth place of captain Kirk or when William Shatner filmed Invasion Iowa there a couple years ago and fooled the entire town into thinking he was shooting a movie there.

I have always been curious about golf in Alabama

Me too. I'm originally from Texas and I keep telling myself that the next time I go home to visit I'm going to drive instead of fly and play a couple courses on the golf trail on my way but never happens... something about that 12 hour drive talks me out of it.

I've been everywhere at one time or another. Almost every state.

Not even close....California!!!! (southern)

350 days sunshine, warm temps, hardly any humidity....no bugs, rain, wind, tornadoes, hurricanes, lightning storms, and the women have all their teeth.

Some of the states mentioned here you can play year round, but you need 20 lbs. of extra gear and a sherpa to get around. Hands down SoCal for casual, year round, dry, green grass golf.

South Carolina. Period. Anyone who says other wise has never really been there. They have the best courses from public to private at the best prices. I'd say Texas or Arizona would be close third behind Florida. I prefer to be in SC between the months of March and September for golf, and here in the Philippines the rest of the year. Hong Kong has some nice courses, but very expensive and hard to get into. But that's just my opinion.

South Carolina is #1. It is hard to beat the Myrtle area. That place is nothing but golf and night life. Next is the Hilton Head area with the southern plantation feel and alot of great courses that anyone can play. You also have the upstate with a more mountain terrain like the Cliffs at Glassy. If you haven't heard of that one just google it. There are some amzing courses here. I love it.

I can not believe no one said New York. Hahaha all kidding aside there are some great golf courses in New York, once they thaw and dry up you get a solid week of golf in the summer. If you are lucky the sun might shine and the high temp might be higher than your golf score (you might have to go really low). Some of the best courses in the world are in New York though. We all know about the ones down state like Westchester CC, Shinnecock, Bethpage, etc. But maybe some of the less known ones upsate. Rochester New York is a hidden golf paradise. I think there is something like 80 golf course in Monroe County where Rochester is Located. It only takes about 30 min to get from one side of the county to the other. I beleive they still play a Nationwide event at Irondiquoit CC and a LPGA event at Locust Hill. The US Open was at Oak Hill a couple of times. The Ryder Cup was at Oak Hill. The PGA champinship a few years back was at Oak Hill. I think the 2008 Senior PGA will be at Oak Hill. Besides the private clubs I have already named and about 5 more beauties there are a ton of great public courses. Most can be played for under $40 18 holes w/cart. If you go an 1-1/2 hours down I-90 to Buffalo New York you will also find some more very nice public and private courses. To bad for the golfers in Toronto that the Fast Ferry was anything but fast. Now that the exchange rate is so close there could have been some great golf trips for you. For me it would have ment nudy bars, good beer, and Leafs Games. WATCH OUT FOR ICEBERGS! I always have the internet, the supermarket, and TV.

California!

Its got heritage. And new courses. Scenic too. Torrey pines? harding park?

If you have never driven down 17 mile drive. you don't know scenic.

I live in utah now. Its got scenic. but not really. if you can see through the inversion, you got scenic. other wise, it ain't worth your health to be out there.

I live in Eastern NC, and there is nothing like it anywhere in the world... in my opinion. There are not only great courses in the mountains... Champion Hills, and Tiger is designing a course... But there is Pinehurst which hosts the North South, numerous US Opens, both mens and womens, but there are also affordable courses there, Pinewild CC for example. And a nicklaus course The Challenge, which in my opinion is a fantastic course. And then there is eastern NC where the is Beach golf which is amazing for those who have not played it. 20+ mph winds and elevated greens and lots of water, great fun. there is Wilmington which was named the number 8 Golf City in the country a couple years ago, and there is a great new course near where I live in beaufort called New River CC. That course is amazing and rivals any myrtle beach, pinehurst, or southern Calif course there is. That is why NC is the best golf state.
