This year it was COLORADO. No snow entire winter, until this week.

Ideally I'd like a house in CO and NC/SC. There isn't better golf in the world than may/june in CO. Castle Pines, Arrowhead, Cherry Hills.

I lived in Denver from May 97 to May 98. It was the year I started playing Golf.

There was a Hale Irwin design I liked....Indian Peaks maybe?

Love CO.

Plus in CO your driver goes an extra 15 yards...

But I was at the Duke University golf course over thanksgiving and it is so nice to hammer your driver in the tall pines and hear that sound echo all around you!

Several things I would look for

1. Plenty of courses of varying styles with decent scenery

2. Affordable golf, dont' want to have to pay $100 bucks every time. Give me good courses at a decent price, and some high end if I want to pay it.

3. Ability to play most of the year, I don't mind the occasional winter break because of snow, but if I can't play at least 10 months of the year forgetaboutit.

4. Weather, I really don't like playing in 100* heat with 100% humidity that often.

5. pace of play/overcrowding.

Never played in SC but I am sure it is a good choice, SoCal seems to crowded and expensive, Arizona is nice but you have to pay big bucks for a decent course and it is too damn hot 1/2 the year. Up north is too cold most of the year, I actually like living in the Kansas Missouri area. Good courses at a very affordable price, I have played every month of the year this year, you have to be flexible but it usually can be done. Texas would be good depending on the part of the state, and OK has some good golf as well. The Denver area is pretty good as well, the weather is not as bad as most think, but the middle of the country is the best bang for your buck.

All things considered, right on the NC/SC border along the coast I don't care to whom you pay your income taxes. Sunset Beach, NC or North Myrtle Beach, SC would work equally for me.

Perhaps TX and FL fighting it out for #2 and #3.

AZ is very nice but expensive in comparison.

So Cal way too expensive.

Here in Portland, OR is the best weather in entire country during the
summer months June through September. Very little rain in those months, mild
temps usually 60-75F, and low humidity. And No mosquitoes!!!

Greens fees are moderate and better (more expensive) courses are lush green.
Herron Lakes is a very good public course. Columbia Edgewater is private and
LPGA played tournament there every year for last 15 years.

Also if you are ever in Chicago, do not miss playing Cog Hill #4 course where
PGA has a tournament every year. It is a public course! And the best course
I ever played in 47 years of golf.

I'm from Canada so I'm not biased toward one state in particular. I've lived in the US on and off for the last twelve years and played golf in a lot of states.
Florida is great but the humidity, bugs and similarity between courses are strikes against it. Affordable and abundant golf though.
South/North Carolina are nearly flawless in terms of golf.
Arizona has tons of courses but again, pricey in the winter, extremely hot in the summer and the diversity of the courses is limited somewhat.
Hawaii - Can't say, never played there.
California - best weather, most diverse courses (ocean, mountain, ranch, desert, forrest) but pricey.
Texas - have't played there.

I'd have to say California or North/South Carolina. I love Arizona and plan to move there but the heat, price (in the winter) and the lack of an ocean puts it behind these two.

I live in Houston now but used to live in Salt Lake. The golf was less expensive and way more scenic in Salt Lake City, but I get to play golf year round here. What is your opinion on the best golf state?
[/quote]
I live in the upstate NY snow belt, so the question is easy. Any state where you can golf all year....routinely. I am jealous of those of you who golf year round.

I live in Az and while it has its positives it is very cost prohibitive to play here if you want quality golf year round.

What courses have you played in Alabama? The best courses in the state I would have to say are all of those on the Trent Jones trail even though I have only played 2

My vote is DFW Texas...My best friend lived there a few years and when I visited it seemed like there was not a bad course and they were all very affordable...I loved it

I've played the courses in Greenville and Prattville. I plan to play at least two other sites before year's end. The RTJ courses are top notch. BTW, Farmlinks and Limestone Springs are also top notch courses and they aren't part of the trail.

Silver lakes in Gadsden is pretty nice but they got hit pretty hard by the tornado last year and wasn't sure if they were going to be able to recover. I have played the one in Mobile, I forget the name of it but it was awesome they have an LPGA event there in April. I haven't played any in Birmingham and I know 1 or 2 of them have SPGA events there, Ross Bridge I think.

Yea...late getting to the party here but after reading all the posts I'm surprised no one has commented that a large number of pros live in Florida. I'm sure like Texas, the fact there's no state income tax helps but it's gotta be the year round weather and abundance of courses. My wife has friends in St. Lucie and sitting at the kitchen table looking outside at the beautiful sunshine...BUT 31°, I see it's going to be 70°+ all week in St. Luice. Makes the though of going to an indoor facility here kinda sad. Of course with this being Christmas week, a "yard pass" to even an indoor place highly unlikely untill at least the day after Christmas.

I moved from Texas to the Philly area this past spring and although I've just been playing a few years, this is the first season I've ever played in long pants! It's also the first time I've been able to walk a course in the summer which is awesome. On top of that I understand this has been a mild winter so far in the mid-Atlantic.

The reason the pros live in Florida has a much to do with the State income tax. Or lack of a State income tax. Same as Texas.

Sorry Michigan but having lived in both Michigan and Ohio... Ohio beats the snot out you. In both golf and football. (sorry about the football reference - had to.)
The ratio of private/semi-private to public play course in Michigan is no good. Ohio has far more public play course at very reasonable prices.

You can not golf year around in MIchigan, CO and Massachusetss .
So Cal, if you can afford and bear the crowded courses and traffic .
Florida and TX if you can handle humidity and cost .
NM is a hidden secret weatherwise also the cost at premium courses is very reasonable . I have golfed many times in NM during christmas eve.. Does not get hot like Arizona and there is no humidity and traffic . No Ocean here .
April and May can help you with golf in windy condition ..

if you have lived in AZ, you would know that you can golf early in the morning during the summer June-Aug. By the time you get off the course, the temp is around 90-95.

Arizona and Florida are the only states where you can count on playing golf during winter and have good weather. I'm just not partial to humidity - makes for a horrible round of golf.

My vote is for Utah. I have only lived here for 3 years, but I will severely miss the golf here if I ever have to leave. Salt Lake and the area within an hour's drive in any direction has probably 50+ courses, most of which are public, in great shape, outstanding views, and available to play for $30-35. I have never once had any issues with slow play or overcrowded courses, and if the winter is bad, southern Utah is only a few hours drive and has another dozen or so courses that are incredible. 9 months out of the year the weather in SLC is great - lots of sunshine, no humidity, no severe wind....overall I feel extremely spoiled playing here!
