Help me with my takeaway

I took some video from down the line and saw something that surprised me (insert fat butt joke here). I had no idea I was bringing the club so far inside on the takeaway. Is it my wrists that are causing that?

What are you string to correct? What is your ball flight?

Very inconsistent. Can be relatively straight, a bad slice, or a big ole come over the top pull-hook. I'm working on the path to ovoid the over the top move, but all that can be moot if I'm not getting it back properly.

Start with your set up. Your hands shouldn't be more than a hand's length from your crotch. Your grip should be right over the balls of your feet. Have someone measure you with an alignment stick. There should be a straight line from your armpits to your hands to the balls of your feet.

 

The setup you have pushes you out on your toes, which makes you push your hands out. When you push your hands out, the club gets whipped inside and flat, because it's out of balance. You want to feel like your hands stay under your shoulders as you do the takeaway. This is a great drill (also pay attention to the posture):

The clubshaft will feel very steep going back, then a little flat as you come down.

The bigger issue is on the way down. Clubface is wide open with massive face closure rate from 3' before impact to 3' after. Freeze it just as the clubhead is even with the back edge of the hitting mat and look at how open that face is. This causes a complete body stall, extension, and flip (which is why shoulders and hips are basically square at impact rather than rotating open).

I appreciate the advice on the actual swing, and don't doubt I have a number of flaws there, but I'm a big believer that you can't swing properly until you get the club back in the correct position. I have been working on a new thought that seems to be helping some, but the frustration continues.

I've struggled with setting up too far away. I thought I'd corrected that but maybe I haven't gone far enough. I'll check this as a key next time I hit. Thanks.

You have a lot of wasted movement in your backswing. Try working on getting the butt of the club pointing at the ball/target line for a long as you can. You can get an alignment stick and hold it in your hands while holding a club.

 

edit: you roll your forearms in the backswing. Try limiting this movement as well
