Wedge Shafts

About 3 years ago I was fitted for irons and wedges: Mizuno MPH5 4-6, MP25 7-PW, MPT5 50/54/58. The shafts I was fitted into were XP95 S300 in the irons and XP105 S300 in the wedges. My wedges are beginning to brown out so I’m going to replace them. My question is, what shafts do I get? XP105s are no longer an option on any OEM custom orders. I haven’t had any issues with these shafts but at the same time wasn’t over the moon in love with them either. How big of a difference do wedge shafts even make? Should I just head to my local big box and get some new wedges with “wedge flex” shafts in them? What has the experience of this group been?

Thanks,

Chad

If you don't know what you like or have not tried the current offing on the wedge flex. Try the off the shelve wedge with wedge flex shaft.

Usually a heavier weight is used in the shorter sticks to balance out. Wedge flex is a more flexible shaft.

You still have the old set of wedge, and could swap the shafts into the new wedge later on if you want to.

i hate wedge flex. with my full swing, it fades every time. Im traveling right now and did not have time to switch new wedges to match my set, and it has cost me quite a few birdies IMO (see: in my dreams). the s400 in my GW and SW are ok, but the s200 (wedge flex equivalent i think) in my LW is terrible. id rather x100 (130 grams) throughout. I hit a lot of full wedge shots depending on course/conditions.

go as heavy with wedges as comfortable IMO (like i mentioned, i think wedge flex is s200 range, so 132 grams for most manufacturers. id look that up to be sure) in the same flex as irons if u hit lots of full shots with them with a decently high swing speed

kbs wege shafts come in 110, 120, or 130, all heavier than what op plays now. if OP wanted stiff to match set, 120g. never had kbs wedge, always had TT dynamic golf come stock in mine

TT dynamic gold is a difference of a gram or two, s200=127, s300=129, s400=130. i cant tell a diffence between the weight of the three, but s200=more fade than s400 for me.

but yea for a stiff iron player, s400

Weight is always the most important factor, so i suggest you get a roll of lead tape and use your XP105 as stating point.

Now look at the difference as uncut weight from those shafts, and UP to what ever option you consider.

ADD that weight difference by adding lead tape to the shaft. Set a mark about the middle of the shaft, and the middle of the lead tape you will add, and align those marks so the tape goes head to grip on the underside of the shaft so you dont see it from address.

Now you can try off how that WEIGHT works for you, and play around with it until you find a weight that feels and works as you want it.

When found you have the weight range you should take a look at, all other options is "eliminated" this way, so now its only feel of flex left so it should be quite easy to find the right shaft when you know what weight that shaft should have. If adding weight to those XP105 dont feel right, then you know that shafts above the weight of your XP105 is not what you look for.

HackDaddys suggestion is always "safe", using the same shaft for both irons and wedges works for most players, and if you dont mind lead tape you can always add a few grams to fine tune feel of those shafts like suggested above by using lead tape on the underside of it, so lead tape is just as useful to tune up shaft weight as it is to tune head weight.

Unless its the small difference to flex that throws you off using S200/wedgeflex, you can add lead tape to them like i suggest above (5 grams to get up to S400), and they might work just fine....just my 2 cents....

I like the softer feel since I play firm flex irons down. I just put some old KBS HI-REV 1.0s in my 50* and 55*. They don't exactly match the C-Taper Lites but are still a good match in feel and expected flight.

Can’t say I’ve had the pleasure. Always willing to try new things.

My reference to KBS shafts pretty much directed towards “shelved clubs”. Stock shafts on wedges right off the rack. Hi Rev wasn’t my jam on the hi toe. And the other ones I had in my MD3 weren’t my favorite. I put S400s in my Vokeys and then finally my Hi toe and decided that’s how it’ll be here forward.

That being said, I should’ve emphasized the KBs wedge flexes earlier.

True Temper makes a few weights in wedge shafts, over a few models. I just got fit for DG AMT red, and went with the DG 115 wedge shaft. I could have probably got the red in wedge, but i had 115's around. My point is, try the 105 or 115 wedge shaft, they seem like a good choice for DG performance in a lighter package.
