Callaway Epic Forged; The Ball Speed Is Frightening

I picked up a 24* "6" iron from CPO to switch back and forth w/ my 26* hybrid that I sometimes struggle with.

It has a SteelFiber fc90 stiff shaft in it and it feels a lot different than my i95 reg's that are in my irons.

And it's not the flex as they actually seem softer than the i95's. I think it's the profile, being flighted. Just taking a bit to get used to it, but much better in the wind than the HYB.

Because the face is like a trampoline, which in my opinion makes you worse and not better (exception- senior golfer with NO speed, or like 20-25+ handicap). I think he embellished a bit. 1.10 with old irons? Maybe in a wedge... 1.4 is obtainable with long irons.

I am still getting used to them after about 6 rounds so far. Looking down at a 7 iron that looks like a 6 iron is an adjustment. After getting over that you have to believe that the ball is going to go just as high and 10 yards further on a clean strike than your old clubs. They definitely are easier to play than my 16 Apex irons. Very soft feel on the clean hits.

No, older bladed style Irons were often Averaging 1.1x, maybe 1.2x if you did well for smash factor. Many newer iron models are showing 7 irons with 1.4x. Just look at the trackman data in the fitting forum, there’s lots of iron fitting data in there.. There’s a big ball speed difference. That Ball speed results in higher trajectory overall, with lower lofts, and hence more distance while still maintaining control.

point is, irons have changed quite a bit in 20 years. And no, a consistent club with a trampoline effect is still consistent. It doesn’t make you better or worse.

”averaging”- across the entire set? Or just one club? Are you including mishits?

“Older blade style”- what is like from 1960 or something? Even so, blades today arent any different from blades from 20 years ago, its a solid chunk of steel.

also smash factors have a TON to do with how an individual delivers the club to the ball. Its called spin loft. You can literally get 1.1 with one player and 1.4 with another with the same club just because of technique and how they deliver the club.

ball speed alone DOES NOT equal a higher trajectory, it equals a higher PEAK height.

The irons will launch a ball higher off a fairway lie than you would expect for the degrees of loft, but get in the rough and you better go to a shorter more lofted iron. The tech won't help with a bad lie or deep in the grass. Something to remember if you play narrow fairways and are in the rough frequently. But off a fairway lie I'm very happy with the clubs. Easy to hit and long. I hit the 5 iron as long or longer than the 4 iron of my '16 Apex set. You will need the A wedge to fill the gap from your PW to your regular SW.
