Tapping In - What's your range?

How far away?

Hi all, just curiousity taking over here.

When you are playing any round in which the score is important how far away will you comfortably tap the ball into the hole? This is instead of marking and going through the pre-shot routine again.

For me, its about 1', mainly due to a few bad experiences in tournaments. From what I see on tour Tiger is probably the "bravest" when it comes to tapping in, often from 2' away......although he did miss one earlier this year, shows it can happen to the best of them.

Interested to hear your thoughts.

Anything outside of a foot I at least mark and go through my routine. I have never missed a 1 footer, but have missed numerous 2 footers.

Probably 1' or 1.5' anything over 2' i atleast read.

I get nervous over them, so I've started to stand over putts fully, I recently changed everything about my putting so I address the ball properly on every putt, so I can keep comfortable

Sometimes as much as 6 feet, usually inside a foot. If I stand over a short one too long it messes me up!

a couple of years ago I missed 19 times in 54 holes in the club championship from 18 inches or less


Anything outside a foot gets my full routine and inside a foot I take my time and will not stretch tap

Thats for sure. They are a lot easier to make when you just walk up and knock them in. Study long, study wrong.

If you had a friend who had a tough time making those short ones and missed a bunch of them. Then slowed down started marking them and began making 99.9 percent of him what would you want him or her to do.


I tell my friends if you think its so easy give it to me, if not shut the hell up.

I'm sorry that you have trouble with short putts, but telling someone to shut the hell up isn't going to remedy that problem.

Totally depends on the situation for me. If I'm by myself and not in a hurry and really focusing on scoring well I will only tap in the really close ones. On the other hand, if I'm with people and need to keep the pace of play up I will tap in probably up to 2 feet and still be quick with those up to 3 feet. Not to say these will go in though.

Why was this moved? How is this not "general golf"?

As I said before, I managed to jibb a few of the shorties and I was never able to trust myself in tournaments. Konrad, obviously you don't play in high profile tournaments, as you don't know how important one stroke can be.

I have no problem at all with them if I take my time and go through my routine. I just can not do it quick.

I tell them to shut the hell up when they say I am slow.
There choice is they can say "Ken thats good"

If it's a tourney or big money game I'll mark anything outside of a 1' to 1.5'. It's when you don't take your time and miss that 2 footer when it matters that really nags at you and is hard to let go.

However far I can reach with my putter, while holding the flagstick in the hole in with my other hand is "tap in" distance.

I have made many 6 foot tap ins, especially when MAD! Go figure.....if golf was as easy as putting I would be on tour.

dpends on the day. if things aren't going well, i'll just one-hand-knock it in. if i'm trying to score, i'll set up normally and just make a confident stroke finishing with the putter over the hole from my perspective... just to make sure i gave it enough.

if I hit the first putt by the hole, then its easy because I can see the read. anyways, I go by the feel in my feet more than my eyes, so with anything inside of 4" I just use my feet, adjust the line while I'm over the ball, and die it in.

1 foot is automatic tap in...
longer than that 1-3 feet would all depend on situation.
E.g. Easy uphill, or slippery downhiller....but also situation in the round.
For example if I've just lagged one really close from far away and the other 2-3 guys have long putts as well, I often try to finish so I don't end up waiting forever to make my 2 footer.

I've always seemed to putt better tap-in style, so I'm experimenting with the tap-in style on all putts. Quick look-over, step up sort of sidesaddle-style and hit it. In my 9 holes Sunday, I putted as well or better than when lining up, taking a practice stroke, etc.
