Very new beginner looking to buy clubs used or new to start with.

Wilson Staff is way underrated and as such is forced to sell their clubs at a steal. Like the C300 irons, a driver, a hybrid, and a putter just lying around on a shelf all brand new and pretty somewhere.

Get a cheap set of regular flex GI irons. Don't worry about 3-6 irons. You'll be good if you can hit your 7 iron well. Hybrids can come in later, but not for beginners. Get the shorter/easier to hit clubs down first, and go to work on the par 3 courses.

Get a 56 degree wedge (might even get a new one but older model. You can find a good deal on those), and learn your short game with that.

Find a putter shape that you like, and buy an inexpensive one that fits your eye. Expensive putters may look nice, but they don't help sink putts.

Like others have said, skip fairway woods. Only skilled golfers will have success hitting those with regularity. We don't want you to quit out of frustration.

Get a driver, one that is 4-5 years old. Those are great deals and still perform very well. Like find a used Taylormade M2 driver. It'll take a while to be proficient at hitting one, but it's fun to hit.

Get a sunday bag. It's lighter and easy to carry, and since you don't have a full set of 14 clubs, they'll fit. Easier to bring to the range too.

Best of luck looking for clubs.

Several decades ago I wanted to start playing golf and my father bought me the cheapest set he could find. After a couple months the ferrules started coming unattached. The head on one club came unglued. I noticed a couple of shafts started to bend. My new clubs felt like an anchor to me in my process to get better at the game.

I decided to save my money for the next 8 months and when I had enough I went out and bought a nice set of blade irons and told myself if I don't learn how to play well I'm a fool for wasting this much money on a set of good irons.

Moral of this story is up to you.

If you want to get better, invest in your tools. If your unsure, go the cheap route.

Right now Mizuno has a sale for their hot metal 919 irons for $700. If you do go this route, You can also go to your local retailer that sells used clubs and buy a set of lightly used sticks.

Lastly, get fitted for your set. New store bought is great, but fitted to your set-up is much more important.

Good luck

Wow a long thread with lots of opinions. If you did enough research to find this forum continue to research and find good used clubs. They will hold value more than a box set or your neighbours 200$ garbage.

Buy as current as you can. What was a legend club in 2010 is usually much less easier than modern. The industry turned to easy to hit in recent years so take advantage of that.

Don’t buy stiff shafts. Buy a higher lofted driver. (10-12) Buy a hybrid over long irons. Spend more money on 5-PW irons and less on a putter. Buy only a sand wedge for now. (56)

Many great deals on new and nearly new Ping, Callaway, Cobra, Mizuno and TM. $1000. Is plenty of budget. As to the lesson comments, yes spend money there too...golf is not cheap but so rewarding.

Lastly, find a buddy a little better than you and as passionate. There is pleasure at every level of the game. Give yourself the tools to hit 1 pure shot per hole and go from there.

Irons: I would recommend Mizuno JPX EZ or Cleveland CG16s or even the TT588. You can find these under $200

Wedges: get a 54 wedge, Cleveland rtx CB 2.0 and maybe 58. Another good beginner's choice is Cobra Big trusty rusty at 55 and 60 degrees

Driver: I would go with a not so old Cobra model like Fly Z or R15 Taylor made (is longer).. there have great directional forgiveness. Just worry about that to start and consistent contact.

Hybrid: Taylor made rescue 2011 3 or 4h

Wood: 3w Taylor made jetspeed HL

Putter: anything Odyssey white hot or the new white hot microhinge or Ping sigma 2 series

This will keep you well under $1k

Do not buy new clubs - there are great bargains out there second handDo not buy "Starter Sets"- they can be poor quality and are often total rubbishGo for the a well known OEM like Ping, Callaway, Titleist, Taylormade, Cobra, Srixon, Mizuno, Wilson, etc., second hand they cost the same as "Starter Set" and they will retain their value somewhatDo not buy a blade or any thing like a muscle back (yet..). Anything forged though is nice and worth itDo not buy anything with an x flex or exotic shaftThe ball is important - do not start with a ProV1x or TP5x, etc., go fo a good brand with a low to medium compression, all the OEM's make good balls. Starting out you will probably not have the strike or club head speed to get the best out of any tour level ball and IT WILL make the game harderAim for a good sized cavity back, medium to wide sole, Reg to Stiff shaft, or a Uniflex shaft if possible

Stick at it, especially when it gets hard, and it will....

TAKE LESSONS.

Once you know Golf is for you, invest in good quality equipment and GET PROPERLY FITTED

After that you can become a proper Club Ho, search out Tour Issue Equipment and dream like we all do here on WRX

Since you are just learning about golf, ask your friends about a decent local golf shop. Go in and try some of the boxed set clubs, find a set you feel comfortable with. If possible, find an instructor/fitter who could show you the basics and find clubs that match your physical assets.

UP front tell them you want basic lessons and an appropriate boxed set.

Do not go eBay until you learn more about the game. You don't get to hit eBay clubs before you buy. You could waste a whole season sorting through stray eBay stuff that just doesn't work for you.

Based on your post I assume you live in the PDX area. There is a guy that has a garage full of used clubs, he does buy/sell/trade events every couple of weeks but the pandemic has shut that down for now. He posts on craigslist when sales are on; the "shop" is in SE near lents.

If you are LH I have a few clubs I could part with and free up garage space.
