My mom purchased my first set of golf clubs when I was 10-years old (I'm now 53-years old). It was a Spaulding Pro-Flite starter set (1-W, 3-W, 3,5,7,9i, and a putter). She purchased the set at ZAYRE for $29. My dad didn't allow me onto a golf course until I was 12-years old. I shot 118 for 18 holes my first time out. I broke 100 by the end of that summer. My sister's husband got me a complete set of Shakespeare golf clubs with steel shafts for $120 when I was 14 years old. I really took off with that set getting my handicap down to an 8 by the time I was 16-years old. I've only owned three sets of irons since (Spaulding Top-Flites from 1981-1990, Wilson Pro-Staff from 1990-2000, and Ping ISI from 2000-present). I've owned numerous drivers and fairway woods over the years. I've had my STX putter for 20 years, my Ping Anser for 30 years, and my Vokey wedges since their inception. Compared to many golfers, I don't go over the top buying equipment. If it works, why change?

Gary Player boxed set purchased in 1978.

Two years later I bought a used set of 1977-80 model Wilson Staff blades (look just like the 81-83 fg-17's) & Wilson Staff 1, 3 & 5 woods (still have those woods). I thought I had the greatest set of clubs ever made! I paid $175 for all the clubs and at the age of 15 it felt like I spent a million dollars.

I became a huge fan of wilson & played their irons until the early 90's. I have a set of every year model of wilson staff irons produced since 1956. I also have the top notch models produced from 1948 to 1955 except the 1952 model. So if you know of anybody looking to sale their 1952 Wilson Top-Notch Irons...I'm looking for a set!

In my senior year of high school, 1983, me & my 4 other teammates had the following irons: Wilson Staff, Hogan Apex II, Walter Hagen The Haig, Spalding Top Flite & Powebilt Citation. I wonder which of the top companies today will only be a memory in 30 years?

Gene Littler Ram Blade Iron 2-PW (think the set had a PW but no sand wedge) with a Wilson Augusta (I think) Putter...the bress one that looks a bit like a genie's lamp, forget the brand of laminated woods D, 3W and 5W...still have the irons and putter...don't know what happened to the D and 3W but the 5W is the Sam Sneed Blue RIdge I think...fun club to hit if you hit it pure...got them all at a flea market years ago for $50...

My Great-Uncle cut down a set of his wife's Patty Berg's when I was 10.

I think I might still have them up in the attic.

My first full set of irons were the Top Flite Tours and are still sitting in my shed. They were a Christmas present about 10-12 years ago when I first started playing before high school. I only used them for a year before I started skateboarding and then I played lacrosse in high school. I just recently started playing again.

Speaking of Slotline; does anyone remember that mid 80s putter they did? Black, with big gold inserts in the heel and toe bumpers. Sort of a 'son of MacGregor Response ZT and a Ping Anser.'

And the irons they did? Again, a bit of a black and gold colour scheme... sort of a high-tech, glitzy Ping Eye...

What happened to Slotline?

I know this is a very old post, but the putter was oversized and it was called the "Slotline Inertial Big Mo". It was brought out to compete with the oversized MacGregor putter that Nicklaus won the Masters with. I still have a "Big Mo" putter and a complete set of Slotline Inertial irons and woods.

My first set of clubs that I bought was Spalding womens left handed. Before that I was playing right handed clubs upside down. I caddied so I did not have much money as a kid and did not know much better either. I played with the ladies set until the shafts started snapping on the down swing. By that time I had met someone that knew a bit about the game.

My first real set of clubs were Wilson 76 Staffs. I picked up used Ping persimmon woods rather cheap and my buddy rebuilt them for me. I played these for many years until I wore the faces out. Switching to metal woods was difficult because they made such a god awful sound and felt completely different to hit.

My how times change. :D

Some old Dunlop Maxfli's blades (3-9) from the 70's. They were the only complete set that I found in goodwill when I first started to play. These things would rip my hands to shreds at my local range, the range barely had grass, so I would hit of hard dirt. The funniest thing I'm going to remember about these is that the 7 iron in the set had a gash straight through the rock hard leather grip, so being the genius I am, I bought some "grip tape" and proceeded to wrap about 5 pieces of double sided tape all around the damaged grip. I basically ended up with an all yellow grip that was nice and sticky. I did think it was a bit odd, but I thought that was the way all golfers fixed their grips. If people couldn't replace the whole grip at the time they would just wrap this weird tape around the grip until they had changed the grip completely. :beruo:

don't recall the name of the clubs, however as my mother spend $25 on groceries the store sale was for a couple of bucks you could buy the club on special for the week. I do recall the chrome pealing off by the end of summer, First "professional" set of clubs was the Club Specials, when they first came out.

A mixed set of Wilson Blue Ridge and Sam Sneads from the 70s with wrapped leather grips that STILL felt good in the early 90's, powerbuilt SW, Spalding persimmon's with GP victory's and a ray cook bullseye. My pop splurged when I was young (aka I got all of his old garage gear).

It was about 42 years ago that my father took me to JC Penny to buy me my first full set of irons - the Byron Nelson Signature model with the reminder grip. I used them for several years until graduating to a set of 1972 Spalding Elite MV2 (a great blade iron). I will never forget that trip to JCP. Thanks, Dad.
