Spin rate to back balls on green

I'm a pretty big golf geek, follow plenty of pros and short game specialists on social media, and have yet to hear people judge if a ball will spin back or not based on certain RPM because it just ins't a single variable question. You could hit a full SW spinning at 12k rpm and it might still run out a bit if you are hitting down wind to a firm green. Where as a full PW spinning 9k into the wind to a soft green might spin off the front. Not only that, pros don't only use spin to stop a ball, they use trajectory. When a flippy amateur sends a full LW a mile high, its a completely different shot than a pro hitting a flighted wedge that takes two bounces and then stops.

Given the right conditions i can toss a ball with enough backspin that will back up. But that depends on ball velocity, landing angle, slope angle where the ball lands, firmness or lack thereof of the landing surface, and other variables.

 

Players were able to back up the ball on greens before trackman. They could also reduce the spin on shots before trackman.

 

A pro will use trackman to validate the technique is actually producing less spin perhaps, but his/her knowledge of the course, and thousands of shots played in real life, will determine the shot he or she plays.

A 12k rpm shot may still trundle forward when played into rock hard greens in 110 degree weather, or a 7 iron might back up a little on receptive greens with a touch of slope.

 

So ... SIGH! IT DEPENDS!

I’ve backed up 6 and 7 irons a little with my irons and a Callaway Chrome Soft and I’ll bet my spin rate isn’t over 7000.

Not sure where you pulled those numbers from.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MSI5RcACBSsto me, it seems like getting a 45 degree landing angle and a smash factor around 1.0 should give you about 10k of spin which could create backspin or perhaps a checked ball. @Hawkeye77, I totally made up those numbers as illustrious and I was hoping that more knowledgeable posters would fill in.
I have no way to prove that under 7000 seems unlikely to spin back but i don’t think it’s enough spin. It’s actually a math issue that I’m guessing someone could compute and show that you are correct and I’m wrong. That’s actually what I was looking for here. Thanks. Fair point on the trajectory - I’d want to experiment on both. Thanks.

It's cute but it almost guarantees you won't hole out if it checks up or backs up.. Hole outs are the difference in most high level competitions.

I like a ball that spins. I can be more aggressive on chips and pitches, knowing that the ball will hop and stop and not trundle 15 feet past the hole.

I hit a 6 iron that spun back 5 feet the other day. I also had a wedge spin back 5 feet, and another wedge (same club and trajectory just different green) hit, bounce forward a few feet and stop. I don’t really know why each ball behaved like it did, though the 6 iron did hit on an upslope. To other posts in here...it depends!
