Back in the early to mid 90s I was assistant superintendent at Kings Grant. When I was there, we hosted the Women's Division 2&3 NCAA Championship. and the Men's Division 3 Championship. It is not a long course, it is a fun course, a bit tight, but playable. When I was there, the greens were fantastic. For awhile, it fell on hard times, and even closed for a few months. Lately, it seems to have made a big comeback. The pictures I've seen look good. The prices look good. I think it would be worth playing.

Buddy works at Cypress Lakes GC, fellow WRX'er. Fun course, character/layout. Has a few bare spots here and there but only if you are offline where you aint s'posed to be! Raymond Floyd had a house, or grew up in one, on the back 9.

Southern Pines is a disaster area. I mean sand golf cart paths, the 18th holes is useless, it was a mess! I should have just played Stryker after all.

I was just thinking about Stryker. I know it’s an old Donald Ross course, and, I would bet that not much has been done to it. I remember it used to get a lot of play, and conditions were not always great, but it would probably be fun to play.

Hyland hills is a good budget course their greens are usually pretty good shape.  I prefer it over southern pines any day.

I think we are talking different courses. I am looking at Highland Country Club in Fayetteville. Not Hyland Hills. Seems like there are 10 different Highland/ Hyland courses in NC. Hard to keep them straight. Ha

How is Highland Country Club? I see it is a Donald Ross. I am looking to round out a trip and am kinda deciding between a cheap round here or at Southern Pines. Any advice?

Highland is private. When I was in Fayetteville, you could only get on as a guest of a member.

The course I am a member at joined open rounds this year and they are on there as well. That let's me get on over there.

Highland is a pretty good track. Not very long but has a few challenging holes, and it's usually in good shape. It is a Ross course but overall I'd say it has less character than some of his more well-known courses in the Pinehurst area. I don't know what Highland would cost you as an unaccompanied guest but if you can play Mid Pines or Pine Needles for anything close do that instead.

Through the app it says 70$. About the same as Southern Pines is charging at that time. I would prefer playing Mid Pines or Pine Needles, but I am already blowing a good chunk on this trip. Those are both 100$+ more.  Was looking for a filler round and these being Ross courses intrigued me.

Hearing Southern Pines is going through some renovation makes me lean toward Highland.

I would play Highland over Southern Pines as well. Southern Pines is a fun layout but it's pretty much always rough around the edges.

A sleeper for you might be Keith Hills. Pretty good track at an affordable price. When I lived in that area I would play in an invitational at Keith Hills every year and always enjoyed it.
