EBay Question - Buyer Accidently Overpaid

ALTSean

Recommended Posts

I had a wedge listed on EBay for $84.99.  I sent the buyer an offer for $74.99, but somehow he declined the offer and the checked out and paid $84.99.  In his note to me after the sale, he said "I accepted the counter offer of $74.99 offer...but it showed up as $84.99"

What should I do now?  Cancel the sale?  If I cancel the sale, do I still get charged a fee from EBay?  Thoughts?

Umm , sounds like he got it for the Low Low price of $84.99 🤨. Befuddles me why in the world would this guy pay the wrong amount?

At this point , to do the right thing ,  I'd probably cancel and relist so that it's legit on eBay , but who knows with this new changeover payment deal how long that'll take for that money in lala land to be released. You might want to call eBay and be certain.

Edit** And no , if you cancel a sale , you aren't charged the final value fee.

There’s an option on eBay, since the cut out PayPal, to refund a partial amount of the sale. I did it a week or so ago when someone bought multiple items that I combined for shipping.

a whole $1  Wow that will break him...

Really. Anybody could tell him to put $10 in the box to make up for it , but he'd be out part of the final value sellers fee, and one of the OP's questions they're specifically asking about. I don't , and I assume you don't , but some would care about the difference.

I just issued a partial refund for $10.  What I do not know with EBay's new payment process and with them taking Paypal out of the equation, is if I still pay a final value fee (FVF) on the $10 that I just refunded.  If I do get hit with a FVF, I could have just put $10 cash in the box with the wedge.  The FVF is now about 15% so while not a large sum of money, $1.50 after adding $10 for shipping, it is more than your average piece of gum.

My guess is the final value fee will be calculated on the $75 final price since refund was initiated thru ebay

You could also send him $$ via paypal by gift .Or you could send him $10 in the package...

Terrible idea. What if the seller later filed a dispute for the $84.99? Buyers remorse? Not satisfied with condition? Damaged during shipping? Lost package never delivered with $10 cash inside? The seller wants to cover himself in any situation.

Do it through eBay the right way.

Just do PayPal refund on the original transaction - it fixes final value fees and keeps it all connected - easy peasy - I do this for postage overpayments etc when I can save the buyer some $$$

PayPal is no longer how sellers get paid on EBay.
