Extension in a Bullseye

I bought a very cool looking Bullseye Slant Neck a while back and it needed a new grip. The leather was flaking away. After taking the grip off I noticed there was a wooden dowel extension in it. It plays at 34 now and while that isn’t bad, I can’t help but wonder about extending it to 35. I’ve a got a new leather grip to put on but the question is, is it worth pulling the plug? Adding another inch in a piece of dowel glued and then screwed in? Or is the best advice to just clean up to old muck off the shaft and throw the new grip on and keep it at 34? I wouldn't hesitate to extend it - I've done several.  The only reason not to in my opinion is if it already has a nice grip and you'd have to wreck it to do the extension.  As yours is already being replaced I'd go for it.

So just heat it and pull it like normal? And should I dowel it or use a Steel or plastic one? Thanks.

I would think you could just heat it and pull it as usual.  Any kind of extension should work as there is very little force imparted on a putter, at least under normal circumstances.  If you tend to slam your putters after a 2 foot miss then I'd suggest steel.  😆

It depends on who did the wooden plug.  If it was done by the factory or someone who knew what they were doing, the plug may be anchored in with little pins (nails) or the shaft wall might be punched to form a mechanical bond.  These need more care in removal so you don't destroy the existing shaft wall.  If you are lucky and none of the above were done, I would use a little heat and pull it.  If it doesn't pull out, drill it out and then use a rotary sander and clean up the walls.  Use a steel shaft extension once you are all done.

Slamming a Bullseye usually results in the soft brass in the fragile neck bending. In fact the early ones are so sensitive that regular checking of head alignment to the shaft is a good idea.

@Ogre41 a photo would help.  I’ve personally never seen a wooden extension but like others said for a putter it is likely ok,  would like to see what you are looking at though.

I ended up just keeping it at the same length and put a leather grip on. The old grip was screwed into the wooden plug. It didn’t look like it would be worth dealing with for a half an inch or an inch.
