is this the best cheap golf ball ever?

I bought this dozen once.   Do they still make it?

TopFlite Hammer Control or Distance is most likely replacements for the D2. Same cover, dimple in dimple, but seems better to take on cartpaths, trees, sharp wedges, without getting shredded. I played the 2022 Hammer Control Yellow, and it had good distance, and nice manners around the greens. Its not a ProV, but it would check up, and release if struck properly. Just have to allow for the release. Had a bunch of greenside chips that I managed to get to 6-8 feet from the hole, sometimes closer. Very predictable after a few holes. At 15 for $17.99, or better at 2 for $30, can't go wrong with this ball, if you still lose a few a round.

I know I seconded the TP5 Practice recommendation already but I'll second it again (third it?).

IMO the only better deal out there on golf balls is the KIRKLAND 3pc ball (if you're a Costco person). And even that is a close call, for just a tiny bit more money you're getting a superior overall ball with the TP5.

I'd say anyone who loses so many balls they can't afford $20/dozen should probably just buy from the online used-balls dealers. There's no reason to pay $1/ball for a very rudimentary, low performance ball like an ULTRA 500 when for $1.50/ball you can get a model that has won major championships and has the best technology and performance allowed by the Rules of Golf.

Sure, maybe you can't tell the difference in a high performance ball and a clunker. But the performance is there whether you can notice it or not. And for $20/dozen (even less for the Costco option) price really isn't an obstacle any more.

I seriously wonder why there are so many 2pc Surlyn covered balls still flooding the market when the price for entry to high performance urethane is so reasonable nowadays.

Because we are still losing golf balls! A buck a ball is lot better than losing $2-3 balls. And all that tech that makes them spin so nicely, and check up on the greens, rears it's ugly head on the tee. Not a great help to the high handicapper! So, that's why there are STILL 2 piece balls on the market! A lot of us just play this game for fun, can't afford lessons, or don't have the time for lessons. We just want to hit the ball, move up, hit the ball again. IF, we get a par, hooray! If not, it's ok. And by the way, the Ultra 500 is just like hitting a range ball. So, I do agree that one should not play this ball, but there ARE other better 2 piece offerings on the market, that give good distance, with just a touch of feel for around the greens. And if you lose one, it's not a big deal. Drop, and move on...

Nothing compares to the Kirkland 3 piece in this price range. Urethane covers for around $14 a dozen.
