There are many reasons why these changes can occur.  I was told once that having a diagnosis of autism allowed parent access to more funding for treatment and that was a contributing factor.  There are lumpers and splitters and it may be that the lumpers slowly gained favor.  Sometimes, genetics allows us to understand that what was thought of as several different but similar diseases is in fact one genetic disorder with different manifestations.  Since this far from my subspecialty (immunology) I was never a part of the discussions concerning changes in the criteria and the development of spectrum concept rather than keeping separate but similar disorders like Asperger's.  Make no mistake, no one who could play golf for a living would ever be diagnosed with autism 30 years ago.
