Wilson irons fg-j8?

Wondering if anyone has any guesses on these irons.  I have 3-pw. Look like the fg -17 model….stamped fg-j8

 

Any insight to what these are?

I believe @No_Catchy_Nickname has a set of these.  They look to be very similar to the FG-17s.  Could be custom made, or could be something specifically for the Japanese market.

 

I don't know that anyone has ever found anything concrete.  And Wilson is said to have long ago discarded their three ring binder with all custom build info; I rather doubt they'll be able to tell anyone anything about them.

Like @NRJyzr said, I have a set of these, which I bought in Japan. I suspect they are a custom offering for a Japanese golfer (hence the J), but other than that I have no idea. Where did you get hold of your set? 

 

It's actually interesting to see another set. I've looked a bit for others, but not found any. I've come across normal FG-17s in Japan, so it's not like they were impossible to get hold of here.

 

I have a FG-17 2i, and it is virtually identical to the FG-J8s. The muscle pad on the FG-17 was, IIRC, 1 mm thinner than the muscle pad on the FG-J8 3i, but that's pretty much a rounding error. Without pulling the heads and measuring and weighing them, it's hard to find anything different between the J8s and 17s.

 

Incidentally, what flex are your shafts? Mine have the black band on the step nearest the hosel, denoting regular flex.

 

Finally, they are cracking irons. I can see why so many people love the FG-17s. Great find.

Just had another close look at the J8 3i and 17 2i, and the sole on the J8 appears slightly thicker. Not a huge difference, but just about noticeable. The sole camber, leading edge grind, and trail edge grind all appear identical.

Thanks for some information that i didn’t know.  These are black band which i would have never known they are regular.  I got these from the first tee, they are given donated clubs.  The “good” ones get sold, these were left behind.  Bags of misc clubs, many junk clubs and a few older gems that get overlooked.

 

adding face pics….these are very good condition for the age, faces still have the “frosting”.   Ferrules were chalking over so I’m trying to remove that and polish them up alittle .   The ferrules have also shrunk just alittle bit.

They look to be in very playable condition. I don't think they're worth much in terms of collectability, so don't hesitate to put fresh grips on them if required.

I hope you like them as much as I do. They are in my top three iron sets that I own or have owned.
