Recommended Golf Courses in Houston for visitors

Hey all,

 

I'm heading to Houston in three weeks with some buddies from the Northeast since they are trying to escape the cold and Houston was warm (other than this week!), cheap to fly to, and had a lot of affordable places to stay. We are hoping to play Friday, Saturday, and Sunday AM so any recommendations for the best courses to play for a range of handicaps (don't want anything overly penal) looking for rounds at $100 or under. We are staying in the Heights Neighborhood, so anything within 45 minutes is preferred.

Houston does not have the best public golf courses but here are a couple.

 

Blackhorse-I like the south course better

Cypresswood-Traditions

Memorial

Gus Wortham

Augusta Pines

Memorial and Gus are good options

Memorial is stupid expensive for non-residents and impossible to

get a tee time.  Gus Wortham is a good choice and a fast round, Sharpstown is ok, Cinco Ranch is a fun place.  Sienna Plantation is fun too.

Last time I went to Sienna the conditions were awful

 

If I were visiting and looking for 3 rounds I’d go with:

-gus

-cypresswood traditions

-wilderness (yes it’s a far drive, but could combine it with something like post golf drinks/visit the beach in Galveston maybe?)

 

almost all the decent (for Houston) publics have crept north of the 100 mark. it’s just really not a good town for public golf.

Sienna is trash! Owned by the same clowns who own and ruined Greatwood. Stay away!
