PSA to those trying to fix Early Extension

Flare BOTH feet at address. I understood the concept that you need hip depth in the backswing to maintain your tush line, but I spent the last 2 months trying to get depth with my trail foot square to the target, making it pretty much impossible. Turned my trail foot out yesterday and was almost brought to tears watching my swing back on video, no e.e. for the first time in my life. Of course this isn’t the holy grail, I made changes to my posture and worked hard at getting the shaft in better position, but that small change was what made everything click.

Early extension is a symptom of something else that's wrong. You need to fix that. EE is the solution (result) your body applies to keep you from burying the club in the ground.

I agree, in my case my trail hip wasn't getting out of the way so my arms had no room to swing through. There’s more than one reason for early extension.

That's an interesting one as I had the opposite experience. With my trail foot flared out a bit my weight will tend to get to the outside of it and my knee wants to rotate out as well, two things that really work AGAINST getting my trail hip working back and increasing depth since it allows more of a slide. When I square up that trail foot, or even toe it IN slightly, sliding becomes impossible and your weight can't get to the outside of the foot. With nowhere else to go it feels easier to then let your trail hip push backwards, increasing depth.

Obviously this can vary from person to person, but i'm of the mind that you want to set your body up to encourage it to move in the ways you want and discourage/block it out from moving in the destructive ways that you don't, with trail side sliding in the backswing being one of those big no-nos.

For me, it was more in my setup and takeaway. I was setting up with too much forward bend putting my armpits out over my toes then pushing the club outside the target line on my takeaway. Took a lot of mirror work and slow-mo practice to straighten out. 

 

Just goes to show it's not the same cause and solution for everyone.

Also spent a while fixing posture, used to lock my locks and have too much forward tilt. Just posted this to give people something simple that might help them.

That rypstick video might be the most impactful video in my golf journey. I’ve seen a lot of ground force videos and such, and monte has a lot of topics about the squat. But this guy puts it so simple, something about it clicked, no more early extension, and my sequencing is a lot better. Went from 105 with a driver to 112-115. Thanks Philiph50.

+1, I used to fight EE as a kid (still do, but used to too) and interpreted it as "hips spinning out too fast". I then read in an interview with Hank Kuehne that he squared up his lead foot and opened the trail foot to fight that, and ingrained that habit. Realized quite some time later that was actually the exact opposite of what I needed to be doing--that setup allows weight to slide to the trail side too much and then have nowhere to go but to extend forward in the downswing because the lead foot is blocking it.
