What should my ball speed be with driver

Recommended Posts

I competed in Long drive years ago.... got away from it.. and golf for awhile.   Got back into golf circa 2016 and actually started speed training again last spring.     When I got back into golf in 2016 I took some lessons and the pro used trackman.   My swing speed was still in the low 130-135 range.     I recently started hitting on my simulator at my country club and paying attention to ball speed.   They use a foresight monitor... my 8 iron ball speed is 145-150....    today I was hitting my 4 iron at 160-170 ball speed and it was traveling 270-275....   I had a 1 iron and was able to get that to the low 180's...

Then I go to my driver.... 177-190 ball speed... carry 310-320....     I feel super ineffective with my driver right now  and was curious if I would actually start hitting the thing decent what my ball speed should be with those iron numbers.

During my speed sessions I can hit 145-147... with the old blue radar.

@Kevin23610? is that you?

HAH...  I just looked up Kevin 23610....  I asked the question in the long drivers forum because I legit wanted to know what is going on.. I am not trying to humble brag but get some idea of what is going on with my driver . I am under no illusion that the blue radar is accurate but i do use it to see if my speeds are going up with superspeed... but at this point to not know how accurate the foresight monitor is either .   This is the first time I have ever really hit on a monitor or even kept track of my ball speed.    Hell last time I  hit on a monitor was 2017 and it showed me at 155 mph... with a 220 mph ball speed... ( I Know that is not legit)... and these things can be juiced up on the course I normally hit my 7 iron 200-210... on the foresight monitor that is my 8 iron distance this year... so it could be juiced up..   I am not winning any world long drive championships with a 180-190 ball speed... with my driver.

@Matchplay10033 Just wondering how your speed with Superspeed Red compares to your actual driver speed?

When I do my first set I usually start low 130's with the red.. by the end of the workout I am touching upper 130's with a few occasionally in the low 140's.

If you can get to 130s with your driver on Trackman, and aren't seeing 190s frequently, you have to either have a busted driver or you are spinning the crap out of the ball (and or launching really, really low).

Or you are hitting bottom a lot or something and need to just work on finding the middle (just keep practicing using a ball speed monitor into a net helps, can work on shot shape at the range).

Swing hard in case you hit it!

Clubhead data will be necessary to say anything for sure, but generally you can chalk up inefficiencies with the driver mainly to strike location and dynamic loft. Strike is going to be the biggest factor and at those speeds will easily be responsible for +/- at least 7mph of ball speed if not more depending on what driver you're using. Dynamic loft will also directly impact efficiency as if your path and clubface control are a bit erratic you can start delivering all sorts of different lofts,  and the more loft you deliver the less ball speed you'll get on average. A nice slightly in to out delivery with a positive AoA struck in the center of the face can yield 190mph BS whereas coming over the top and leaving the clubface open a bit combined with a heel strike for example could easily drop you down into the high 170's with the same swing speed. Your driver mechanics may also be delivering different speeds as well.

I'm very lucky if my 4i touches mid/high 140's and I can carry a driver 310 when hitting high draws, so you're definitely losing quite a bit somewhere in the details of your delivery. Getting onto something that can measure club data, either a GCQuad with face dots or a Trackman, will definitely provide the details needed to draw a solid conclusion.
