Make my own putter.

Somewhat bored when not on the golf course so thought i would make me a putter; since that is the weakest part of my game and IMO, a homemade putter much easier to make than any other golf club.

 

I'm living on a low pension, so $$ is limited but time not so much. I figure to follow the  Rule book on size/shape of head and shaft angle but beyond those 2 conformities, it's my choice (i think).

 

Probable go with a block of wood, put a brass plate on the bottom and face, add uniform weights to each side, an old shaft or even a wooden dowel, a grip, a bit of paint and away we go.  Am interested in the side-saddle technique so will copy that idea.

 

Any ideas or cautions you can provide, i'd be grateful.

This is an interesting idea that should be feasible to pull off. I really like my current putter. But I dabble in 3d printing. Makes me want to play around with a design or two.

It’s not really that out there of an idea, plenty of artisan wood putter makers out there you could use for inspiration.

 

I’ve noticed they tend to use brass inserts for the hosel to glue into, probably due to the tighter tolerance you can achieve by turning a brass insert vs using a drill bit in wood. Plus I’d assume the knurl the outside of those inserts to help seat them and prevent them turning after prolonged use. Anyways that’s what I would do…. most seem to be face balanced mallets, it’s likely easier to use a double bend shaft then trying to fit a hosel to one. 
 

You can get lacquers in a whole ton of different shore hardness as well so if you didn’t want to brass plate the front. Heck you could even pocket the face and pour in a poly to any shore hardness your heart desires (make your own white hot insert if you so desire, tint it any colour you want) 

 

or use 6061 aluminium for a face

 

heaps of different design directions you can take, just gotta figure out which way you wanna go.

You might have to stabilize that wood somehow, several processes so one day your putter isn't a warped mess.

Type of wood would be important. It would affect weight, sound, and feel.

 

 I don't think warping would be an issue at all. We're talking about a fairly small AND thick piece. Even in the rain it's not going to get THAT wet. As with any woodworking, you'd use climatized wood.

 

Nothing says you have to make it out of one piece. I'd probably laminate a few together.. Question is which direction should the grain go?
