My wife and I have never been and we just started to plan out a trip to Ireland for next year.  Plan on booking it myself and getting a rental car.  Only thing booked at this point is Lahinch and Ballybunion b/c we were told those were the hard ones so secure them early.  Current plan is:

F - Arrive Shannon / Drive to Belmullet (Or maybe just to Galway not really sure yet, open to options)

S - Carne Hacket / Stay Belmullet

Sun - Carne Wild Atlantic / Drive to Lahinch / Stay Lahinch

M - Lahinch (Confirmed tee time at 1400) / Stay Lahinch

T - Drive to Kilarney / Stay Kilarney (was told killarney is a fun town)

W - Dooks / Stay Kilarney

T - Tralee / Stay Kilarney or Tralee

F - BallyBunion (Confirmed tee time at 1000) / Drive back to shannon or stay in ballybunion

S - Fly Home

Looking for any recs, problems with this plan, places to stay, food to eat, places to see, best towns to stay in, etc, etc..  Thanks in advance.

Cheers!

You’ll have a GREAT trip! I’m heading over there the first week of October. I’ve played Lahinch, Ballybunion, and Tralee on my trip last year. This year I’ll be playing Galway Bay, Enniscrone, Carne, Strandhill, Rosses Point, Narin & Portnoo. Since you are driving yourself I would not recommend driving to Belmullet from Galway after arriving at Shannon airport. You will be tired from the flight and exhausted after playing Galway Bay, (which I recommend). You will not feel like driving another 2 hours after you will be on very little sleep for 20 + hours. After your round, relax, have a nice meal and get a good nights sleep so you’re ready to play the rest of the trip. After you do the Carne loop, I would try to do the majority of your driving to after your rounds of golf each day. It will be better on your golf and your rest.

Day 1

Arrive in Shannon, drive to Galway Bay for golf (1 hr) then stay there after round. You’ll be exhausted so get a good nights rest in Galway.

Day 2

Drive to Enniscrone Golf Club, 2 hrs) A MUST play if you’re in County Mayo! Then stay the night in Enniscrone. Diamond Coast, Waterfront House, and Ocean Sands are all nice hotels. GilRoy’s, Pilot Bar, and The golf course restaurant are all good options.
Day3

Drive to Carne Links, (1 hr) for golf, then drive to Lahinch (3hrs). If you have some extra time and daylight, you can take The Wild Atlantic Way route for some great views and sights. When you arrive in Lahinch, there are a few good hotels and many B&B’s. I’ve stayed at Lahinch Coastal Hotel and it was good. Not 5*, but that’s not my style. Atlantic Hotel and Vaughn Lodge are also good. There are a few really good seafood restaurants in Lahinch. Waves is very good along with VL. Randaddy’s is more casual but still really good food. Vaughan’ s Anchor is also really good in Liscannor (about a 8 min drive). The 19th is a GREAT pub. Go see Paddy for a pint or 6 and experience the craic and hospitality.
Day 4

Play Lahinch, after your round make sure to go see The Cliffs of Moher. (15 mins) then drive to Listowel (1.5 hrs via Killimer Ferry or 2 hrs via Limerick) or Ballybunion (same length). In Listowel I would recommend Listowel Arms Hotel. Allo’s, and Gapo’s are good choices for dinner. In Ballybunion you could stay at either The Wilde, which is in the village, or at the 19th Lodge which is across from the course. Stroller’s at the 19th Lodge is good, as is Marine Restaurant.

Day 5

Play Ballybunion then drive to Killarney (1hr) It’s a tourist town so there are literally 100’s of hotels. I rented an Airbnb when I was there so can’t help with hotels. There are 100’s of restaurants, but we ate at  Foley’s and it was fantastic, then at Kitty O’se’s the second night. I had the fish & chips that didn’t disappoint. Defintely visit Torq waterfall, Rosses Castle, and the Abbey.

Day 6

Get up early and drive The Ring Of Kerry ( it’s a coastal loop road that will take about 2 to 4 hours depending on the number of times you stops) I’ll leave a link and pics, but definitely don’t miss Ladies View, Moll’s Gap, Kerry Cliffs. There will be plenty of other spots you’ll want to pull over and see. It’s an incredible drive! The ring will take you back into Killarney.

Day 7

Drive to Tralee (45 mins) and play Heaven on Earth. Have lunch after your round, definitely get the seafood chowder! I would try and describe the course, but words don’t do it justice…. Drive back to Killarney

Day 8

Drive to Dooks (35 mins) then you can either drive up to Limerick (1.45 hrs) or Shannon (2 hrs) and spend the night there.

Day 9 Short drive to the airport then fly home.

It all sounds wonderful and what you propose was part of my own trip to Ireland in 2018. Having just come back from Carne I am 100% for that extraordinary course but… going from Carne to Lahinch after golf will be horrendous. I would break that journey somehow in say Westport or Clifden. Enjoy some Craic and enjoy.

Is it that bad?  Even with an early tee time?  We were thinking since we were going to stay there after golf the first day we could get a 7-8am tee time.  Be done by noonish and have all afternoon to get to Lahinch, bad idea?

Thanks for the sample itinerary..  We weren't really planning on playing on that first day in Galway, but good to know there is an good option if we get the itch..  Would you recommend Ennicorne over playing both Carne routings?  It looks like we can't get all 27 holes there unless we play over 2 days according to the online booking engine.  Really appreciate the feedback.

Cheers!

I wouldn’t miss Enniscrone. It’s right up there with the best. Playing the Wild Dunes 18 at Carne and The Dunes Enniscrone is about as good as it gets.

Irish roads are generally not that wide so you drive slower and it can be stressful if the weather is not good. Your tee time next day at Lahinch is 2pm so why rush ? There’s plenty to see along the way like the Burren. Just a suggestion.

When @Chanceman says “Irish roads are generally not that wide” he’s understating it a bit. You’ll be driving on some roads that are barely wide enough for two cars. It’s nothing like driving over here. Not to mention you’ll be sitting in the other seat and on the other side of the road. Not trying to discourage you, just want to let you know what you’ll experience.

Is it a mistake to skip Dublin?

Not a mistake, but trying to squeeze in too much in a short amount of time would be a mistake IMHO. I spent 2 weeks in Ireland last year. I spent 3 days touring Killarney, County Kerry, and County Clare. Then spent 3 days in Dublin and played 2 rounds (Corballis & Druids Glen). Then drove to the West and played 7 days (Doonbeg, Lahinch x2, Ballybunion x2, and Tralee x2). Then drove back to Dublin and flew home. My advice would be if you want to do lots of things, just extend your stay a few more days.

I think so. Dublin is definitely worth a day or two. How can you say you have been to Ireland and not experienced at least a pub or two in Dublin's Temple Bar? Or strolled around St Stephens Green? Or walked along the Liffey and felt a little of the vibe of James Joyce or the rebels of the Easter Rising. Its a cool place.

In the spirit of not doing too much it is looking like either Dublin OR Carne.  Anyone have strong opinions either way?  Maybe we could get a round in somewhere around dublin?  Carne just has to be so far out of the way.  hahaha

Well, I enjoyed Dublin but Carne would be my vote. However, if Dublin is your choice due to the remoteness of Carne there are some very good ones in the Dublin area. Royal County Down and Ardglass is only a 1.5hr drive. County Louth (Baltray) in an hour, and you have The Island, Portmarnock, Royal Dublin within 30 mins.

Part of Carne's charm is the fact that it is so remote.  My vote is Carne.  Also, Enniscrone is an unbelievably enjoyable round of golf.  I'd shoot for 18 at Carne and 18 at Enniscrone over 36 at Carne.  Ballina is a great town to hub out into Sligo/Mayo.  The Carne, Enniscrone, County Sligo trio is about as good as it gets.

Not at all, it’s only an hour and half drive on a four lane highway most of the trip. I’d maybe even do 36 holes and play at Ardglass, best opening holes of links golf in the world IMHO….

Don't try to squeeze in too much. Dublin has so much history and so much culture. It's worth a trip on its own. There is great golf around Dublin, but you already have a lot of great golf On your itinerary. I'd stay on the western side of Ireland and do Dublin and/or RCD on another trip.

Man, those are both good options. Plan 2 is less driving for sure, but I’d vote for Plan 1 since you get to play Carne, Enniscrone, Lahinch, Dooks, Tralee, and Bally and see more of the countryside.

Try this for Option 1 -

Friday - Arrive SNN, Spend a few hours in Galway; Drive to Ballina; Stay in Ballina 3 Nights (Check out Mount Falcon Estate)

Saturday - Knockoff your jetlag with a full Irish and a seaweed bath; Enniscrone in the afternoon

Sunday - Carne Wild Atlantic Dunes (Check out the North Mayo Coastal Route back to Ballina to see Ceide Fields & Downpatrick Head)

Monday - Drive to Lahinch; Play Lahinch at 1400; Stay in Lahinch 1 Night (Check out Cliffs of Moher near sunset & Enjoy the pubs of Lahinch)

Tuesday (Rest Day) - Drive to Killarney (Check out Killarney National Park & Enjoy the Craic in Killarney Town); Stay in Killarney 3 Nights

Wednesday - Dooks (Check out Ring of Kerry afterwards)

Thursday - Tralee

Friday - Ballybunion at 10:00; Stay in Adare, Limerick or Shannon 1 Night

Saturday - Depart SNN

If you are looking to really experience Ireland, I wouldn't overextend myself on both coasts.  Less time in the car means more time with the Irish people.  They make the trip!

I think this is pretty much what we are going to do..

Is staying at adare for 1200/night worth the cost?

A few people have mentioned playing all 27 holes at carne in one day.  How do you go about booking this?  Is it as simple as just asking?  Or just something they have done away with with recent golf popularity?

I'm not sure about staying at Adare Manor.  My best lodging experiences in Ireland have been at Bed & Breakfasts that cost no more than $125 a night.  The village of Adare is pretty cool and would be a fun last night.  As far as playing 27 at Carne, I emailed Fiona and she set us up with the Hackett 18 in the morning and the Kilmore 9 in the afternoon.  They rotate Hackett / Wild Atlantic Dunes every other day, so the 18/9 will vary depending on the day you are playing.

I think we are going to take your advice and stop in Westport..  Looks like a cool town with great live music..  Any recs for Westport?

Any recs for best towns for live music?  Our details around the golf are still up in the air..  Cheers!

Westport and Ballina both have good live music scenes.  Westport has Matt Malloy's which is one of the most well known in the country.

Are you just using Airbnb to book them?  Or is there a better option to use in ireland?  Thanks for all the help!  Cheers!
