I have my first high school varsity coaching position!

Seems like a good plan. To me, 10-15 is the magic number for a golf team. More than that and it basically becomes a "participation trophy" type vibe.

After all, golf is a sport where only 5 players (maybe 6 in some states) actually compete in the event. Imagine if a basketball team showed up and sent there starting 5 out onto the court, and then still had 22 players crammed into the bench area 🤣.

Yes 12 would be a perfect number. I have a few on the team that may never make a varsity match based off qualifying scores (we host a couple tournaments and put in multiple teams) and its hard when you only bring 6 to district/state tournaments. A bunch of mine will pay 2-3 jv matches and then some that will play 2-3 varsity matches for their season.

To me coaching isn't reading putts for a player.  Football coach isn't telling the QB where and how to throw the ball.  I feel like this is what it becomes with coaches on the greens.

It could become that. And I know some coaches may over coach if allowed on the green. I just know that there are certain times where players may struggle to see certain things on the green or take certain things into account and if I am there, would like to be able to help as much as possible, obviously not taking 5 min to read a putt or anything like that but to remind of uphill/downhill, big break/little break.

Im adding a question to any other high school coaches...

Does your state have a rule about when you can or can't say something/coach a player? Ours says we can only coach from tee to green, meaning once on the green we can't coach, which I am not a fan of neither are a lot of other coaches.

Ours can only talk to players between holes. Not at all while they are playing. A hole

I was just reading the rules for WA. The coach can coach tee to green, no commentary once on the green.

Interesting rule I noticed:

The coach or players cannot use GPS watches, but can use range finders. However, if a player in a pairing has a rangefinder the other player can access it. If you don't allow the other player to use it, there is a penalty. Coaches can also carry range finders but must make the RF available to kids on the opposing teams.

Most tours adopt this rule.    It helps pace of play allowing a competitor to ask the question "What distance did you get?"

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

I figured that was the case, I have just never seen it in writing. I have definitely noticed kids had no problem asking one another.
