Breaking 70 … Feel Player

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

Have a season  goal of breaking 70 and just looking for some positive input from instructors/good feel based players.  Clock is ticking and know it’s close.

Have come close with a 71 and several 73’s.  However, tend to shoot 75 - 78 more often due to losing feel and getting ball bound a few times per round.  Feel player that’s worked hard on fundamentals this year.  Process is to focus on nothing but setup and fluid balance once over the ball.  Hitting lots of great shots but every once in a while technical tension creeps in and kills me.  Was a bad wrist roller on takeaway and can jump back up and kill me in the first half inch of swing occasionally.  Short game included, will be getting up and down like a machine and just suddenly stub a chip.

Any advice from feel players that struggle with the occasional ball bound tension?  90% of the time I have the nice loose feel of dancing into the ball and good sequence.  The other 10% is killing me!

The video I’m seeing starts halfway through your downswing and looks like it was shot on a calculator, not much to comment on without a better vid unfortunately. 😅

You don't need swing help...you need to keep getting yourself in position to break through that score barrier until you get it done as you answer many of your own questions and appear to have a good plan to play your best golf. If you feel technical tension is taking a couple shots per round away from you then you need to get into that situation as often as possible and overcome it.  Swing help will do nothing but take you further away from that and make things more technical and there is nothing you can do to your swing that will make it perform in that 10% situation other than actually performing in those situations.  When you practice, mentally you should be putting pressure on every shot that you hit so that you can reduce the stress felt by the body when it is time to actually perform.  The first shot of a round is no more or less important than the last one and they should each be given the exact same amount of focus where each shot is placed within its own individual compartment and have no bearing on the next, whether it is a 300 yard drive or a 1 inch putt they are all equally important.  You don't need swing help, you need to continue to condition your mind.

Touché, horrible video indeed, haha.  What happens when you post at midnight while enjoying libations and try to make a quick swing vid with no stand or help.  Thanks for the laugh!

Thanks, I’ve been grinding on the keep putting yourself in place to have a chance plan.  Good to hear it reiterated.  I’ll definitely continue working on setup, fluidity, and reaction to target along with staying in the moment.  No doubt the mind/body connection is a big factor in getting over the hump.  As we know, the windows get smaller and smaller with each goal…breaking 80, breaking 75, breaking 72, breaking 70.  In many of the ball bound or yippy moments “it” can be felt at setup so definitely need to develop a reset process.

IMO, and with me, scoring and mistakes at this level is mostly mental.  Finding myself mentally lazy, not seeing what I should see, and or picking the wrong club.  I am a feel player chasing my age "70", means 1 or 2 under par.  My lowest is 68, but that was some time back.  Currently, scores are a low of 72, with some 73s and 74s, thanks to those special brain-dead moments.  It's all about good judgment and staying in the moment.
