A suggestion - put in a blunt small spike (kinda like those plastic free ball markers you get at some clubs) at the bottom that anchors the marker to the ground so when you are trying to line up the center line of the marker to the hole, all you have to do is rotate the marker rather than have to shuffle/move/nudge the marker back and forth. 

 

Would love to get one of your creations but I don't want to spend $100 again for a ball marker. LOL. 

 

Thanks! I was thinking about adding something to the base like you suggest. Only "trouble" is that prints generally need to be flat on the base. It can print with supports, but I don't think it'd turn out well if all that was touching the build plate is a tiny spike. My thought is to recess a hole or something in it. Then just glue in a small nail (or similar). Or even a standard plastic ball marker.

 

With all the interest in this thing, I'll post here if I end up printing some for distribution.

You could put a hole or two in it for tee pegs instead of a spike to stabilize the marker as a temporary solution! Following along closely. Great stuff!

Printing up a couple different "v2" versions. Both scaled to be the same width as a golf ball's diameter. With one version having a tab on the back that should accept a tee. Figure that's the easiest way to work in some way of securing it in the green. While also providing versatility in still being able to use it without a tee.

 

If I were to make these on a large scale, I might embed/attach a metal disc-style ball marker to the base. Plastic would work too. But theres a chance the "spike" could break. The marker would still be usable. But if I'm making the effort to add that feature, a metal marker would be much more robust.

Little update. Fortunately another member who owns a printer was able to print one and give some feedback (@sethdavidsdad). I'm sure he can share more. But the short of it is that it worked really well or alignment. Only "flaw" is that it was a little too light. No surprise given that filament isn't all that heavy. 

I experimented with some other options. One is a tee/peg model. Which has an extra tab on the back that'll accept a standard(ish) tee. Another is a two part design. Which has a recessed hole for a rare earth disc magnet. Then the two halves are bonded together. Not only does this triple the weight. But it adds some utility. 

 

Thinking I'll print up some batches in the coming week or two if folks are still interested.

My experience, I was able to test out the original version. Looks great when printed and colored in. Printed in grey will try to post a pick later. Issue I had was when trying to line up the ball on the line that I wanted with the marker I would bump the marker and the marker was so light it would move around. So, I would have to realign the marker towards the hole. Don't think the tee version or peg version will work as well because you don't move the marker you move the ball to match the marker. Adding weight with a magnet is an excellent idea.

For those of you who haven't seen this or watched the video. You line the middle(longest) line up exactly to the hole. Next you use your judgement to decide if the break is a 1, 2, 3, or 4. You can use your feet or a green book or just visually read the break. Next instead of using fingers to determine start line you line the ball up to the corresponding line on the marker. So, if you think it's a slight break right, line the line on the ball to match the first mark right of center. Pretty simple and easy.

Appreciate the testing and firsthand feedback. From the start, the weight definitely felt like it could be heavier. The tee (or ball marker) approach could help secure it. But beyond what you point out, another issue with that route is that it could make placing and removing it cumbersome. Since it sits close to the ball, it almost can't be picked straight up. But instead kind of slid away from the ball and then picked up.

 

Thinking the magnet version is the clear winner. Out of curiosity, I looked up the weight of an average poker chip. As a lot of guys use those to mark their balls. Google says 9 grams. So the magnet version of the DIY true aim is approaching double that weight. 

 

Funny coincidence. I'm a big fan of the ol' red, white, and blue. Which are exactly the colors of enamel paint I picked up the other day. Should have some needle bottles here later this week. So if all goes as planned, I should have a batch available sometime next week. 

Looks like around a dozen guys are interested. And I have 12 of the rare earth magnets on hand. So that'll probably be the initial availability. Not sure on cost with shipping and everything. Will keep you all posted.
