Balmy 60 and rainy.  The heat dome isn’t too interested in us.

I don’t know what all the fuss is about. Outside of a really wet start, we’re having a pretty nice summer so far. Checked the weather today and saw a forecasted high of only 87°, which is VERY cool for this time of year. Tropical storm in the gulf pushing clouds our way, but no rain expected. Yet, there was also an excessive heat warning. At 87°?! WTF?

My back is finally getting back to the point of being able to hit some balls. Friday morning tee time!

Looks like we might have a Stanley Cup Finals series after all! I thought the Oilers were going to run away with last night’s game, jumping out 3-0. But the Panthers stormed back. Very entertaining game! While it didn’t really matter, this save on the empty net was epic. I really didn’t think he’d catch up to the puck.

Drag the cat back to Edmonton!

Hello Loungers!  I hope everyone has a great Hump Day.  Just returned home from walking 18 where I shot 77 with playing the ball down in the rough and up in the fairway.  My PXG 7 wood has come in handy hitting out of the rough.

That was a heck of an effort, and now this series is getting kind of interesting.

No sir.  I really don’t like fishing, I will go, but I’d rather just sit on the boat and drink.

heat dome grips nation, climate change ...

Yesterday while we were playing it was lovely on the golf course with a temperature of only 79*. Today it was nice again with a high temp of 82*. Tomorrow it warms up a bit and it will be 85*. Then the Heat Dome hits Asheville.

Friday 89*

Saturday 92*

Sunday 92*

Who else will be  Dealing with The Dome this weekend?

Looks like 85-93-88 for us.  However, it's supposed to get up to 93 where we're playing on Sunday.  In theory, we should be long gone before it reaches the high.  That's still better than the 99 it's supposed to hit there the day before.

I’m not old enough (not quite 50) to have seen Hank Aaron or Willie Mays play.

The best baseball players I’ve ever seen are Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey Jr., Greg Maddux, and Randy Johnson.

RIP, Say Hey! Heaven just got a lot more fun.

Kind of a strange feeling when a childhood sports hero passes.  Something that will never be replaced is gone.   As an adult, you may admire certain athletes, but they can never attain that place in your mind where you held the idols of your youth.

Indeed. I was not ever and still am not much of a baseball fan. I didn’t grow up playing the game so my knowledge is very thin.

My sporting idols from being a kid were NBA players, college FB, and soccer — viewed weeks later on bootleg video tapes. Thankfully, with one major exception, those guys are still around.

Willie, up there in baseball heaven, will get to make that basket catch over his head everyday. And say hey, I noticed you mentioned two Seattle Mariners.

Idolatry has changed so much since these megastars were playing.  Dimaggio?  He was a womanizer, Magic?  I suspect you could name just about any great from any era who didn't have a lady in many other cities they played in, much like musicians.  The beat writers never brought it up, it wasn't part of their story.  They wrote about the game, not unless the player brought it up, ala Doc Ellis and the LSD game was anything socially unacceptable brought up in the papers.

Then the internet, cell phone cameras, and the desire for the gotcha shot.  As soon as a star is born, a star is killed, or at least they try to so they gain clicks and notoriety as writers and reporters.

Perfect example happened this weekend.  Do I condone driving while under the influence?  No.  Did I ever think Justin, who did the epic D**k in a Box skit was a teetotaller, nope didn't think that either.  He made a mistake millions of folks make every single week, but they don't end up on the evening news nationwide.  Can anyone tell me what was gained by "breaking" that story?  Because I certainly don't see a purpose to it.  If it were an OJ thing, or a Madoff thing, OK, but a DUI?

The real issue, IMO, is that the term “evening news” really doesn’t apply any longer. It’s 24x7 and that’s not including all the crap on the Twit (or whatever it’s called now), TikTok, IG, etc. I don’t use any of those, but I get plenty forwarded to me. Gotta fill the hours with something, so we get wall to wall coverage of Timberlake’s DUI.

BTW, the d in the box reference was righteous!

Yep, two of the best I ever saw were M’s. Can you imagine being a lefty and digging in with Randy on the mound? Man please, that release would look like it was 10 feet behind your ear!

I would not be able to select between young Bonds and healthy Griffey. I am too young to have seen 🔨 Hank Aaron or the Say Hey Kid but I cannot imagine seeing better players than Bonds and Griffey in person.

I am on The Twitter and I stay far away from anything news or politics related.  I will block stuff in a second to keep my feed clean. The only reason I got on there is it’s a really good source for youth / HS / college wrestling material. I have found there is some really good content on golf too, as long as I stay vigilant about the political stuff which I do not want.

I saw Bonds in person, and he wasn't a cuddly fellow.  Not at the ballpark, but out and about.  He was one of the few Steeltown Heroes who didn't embrace the community like most did.  I mention it all the time, but Steelers would throw the football with us when we saw them and ask to do so if we had a football under our arm, I played street hockey with THE Penguin, we didn't see a ton of Pirates around but I did meet Willie (recounted long ago in this thread I believe)... and then there was sullen, angry Barry Bonds just wondering if I was going to ask him for something.  Newsflash, I didn't.

Oh yes, I saw young Barry play too. I kind of like a player with a real edge to him and BB definitely had that. The footage of Jim Leyland (another guy not to be F’d with, ever…) cussing him up at spring training is great.

I guess now that I think on it I did grow up seeing more baseball than I thought, but it’s a very, very large distance to how much I loved Showtime, college FB, and Maradona.

Jimmy Leyland, that guy was great, loved him.  Full sized candy bars on Halloween and he was so nice to us.  Since he was a cause celebre we had to ask but, when we would play bike tag we would just run our bikes into folks lawns because that's where you could hide.  So we asked him if his yard could be in play, he said heck yeah, just don't ride through the garden.
