I got my hickory HIO at Cherry Hill (Walter Travis designed) on August 18, 2020. Eight days later at one of our Hickory Tour events, I witnessed a hickory HIO by my friend Nick (his first). Five days later, my friend Gerald got his first HIO, also with a hickory shafted club. In 13 days, I saw three HIO’s, all with hickory shafted clubs.

Maybe I need to change shafts?  Sounds like steel and graphite are overrated!

I would like to say thank you to all who answered my Poll questions today. (there is still plenty of time for others to join in that haven't yet) I thought there might be some fun discussions that would come from those 11 questions and you gents did not disappoint me.

Who knew?

In the back hallway of the 828 Pizza restaurant there was a photo I hadn't noticed before today. Why it is @Double Mocha Man and one of his girlfriends enjoying a picnic on the shore of Bellingham Bay.

Links Lounge Golf Poll

How many of the following have you completed?

1. Made a Hole in One

2. Driven a green

3. Broke a club

4. Met a Pro Golfer

5. Been on a golf trip

6. Made an Eagle

7. Made an albatross

8. Chipped in

9. 5 putted

10. Made more than one birdie in a round

11. Been hit with a golf ball

Me

1.   I have had 3 Holes in One

2.  Never have I driven a green. I am a short hitter.

3.  I have never broken a club intentionally.

4. I have met dozens of PGA Tour players as I have attended over 50 TOUR events.

5  I have been on a few golf trips with golf buddies.

6. I have made a few Eagles.

7. I have never had an albatross.

8. I have chipped in a bunch of times.

9. I have 4 putted but never 5 putted.

10. I have had many rounds where I have made more than one birdie. 5 in a round is my record.

11. Twice I have been hit by a ball when playing. Both times it happened when I lived in the D.C. area. Once in the chest and once in the thigh. Both times I was in the middle of a fairway.  It was scary and both times it left a deep bruise that took weeks to heal up and disappear.

Count me in for all EXCEPT #7 and #11.  But I've had some close calls on each.

Oh, I did catch a friend's wedge shot once. Won't ever do that again, I had a bruised palm for a week.

My 12 year old daughter bladed a wedge out of the bunker and I caught it as well, or it would have hit me.  She says, “Your ninja training is complete.”  We still joke about it.  Fortunately she was only 12 so it didn’t hurt too much.

In my case my buddy Steve was having an awful day. He's well short of the par 3 uphill 14th green and can't even see the pin. I'm standing on the far fringe waiting for his incoming shot. Well, he completely flies it over the pin and I'm thinking heck, I'll just catch the son of a b****, drop it on the green and make Steve's day a lot better.

11. Been hit with a golf ball

1.  Yes, twice - both went in on-the-fly.

2.  Yes and, admittedly, it was not intentional.

3.  Technically, no.  I did bend a putter shaft once when I hit my bag in aggravation with another club.

4.  Gary Player at the Old Course in St. Andrews in 2022.

5.  Many.  I've been on 25 "Slicers" buddies golf trips (I missed 1 year) and Scotland in '22 and Ireland in '23.

6.  I don't keep count, but it's definitely less than 5 and I honestly can't remember the last one.

7.  Never.  Closest was ~5 feet and that was a very long time ago.

8.  Don't keep count of these either, but I'm guessing it's less than 10.

9.  Yes.  Most recently at Wolf Creek in Mesquite, NV, last month.

10. Nowadays, very rarely.  I'm having trouble remembering the last time I did that.  Used to do it often when I was a 4 index in the early 90's.

11.  Surprisingly, no.  AFAIK, I haven't hit anyone either.  Though there have been close calls for both.  I did break a window on a house when I was first learning to play at the local 9-hole course.  That would've been 1980-ish.

In the area of argument for a HIO on a par 3, executive course that DMM inhumanely refuses to accept, my playing pard said I hit it in the hole in one shot and that is the very definition of a Hole In One isn't it? As much as I would love to take advantage of an interpretation loop hole, umm no. I have resigned myself to the conclusion that I will never have a HIO.

... and you can't shoot your age on an executive course.  😁  Though in your case chisag, I know you've shot your age, many times, on a regulation 6000+ yards course.

For many, many years there was an asterisk next to Roger Maris' name for most home runs in a season.  They had expanded the season by 8 games and Mr. Maris hit his 61st in the extra games.  An executive course gives you many more opportunities to have a hole-in-one.  So if you get one accept that asterisk. 😁  Personally I have two asterisks and one legit hole-in-one.

That's just silly.

A season of baseball is X number of games. I can jive with the idea of adding games to that season mucks up a record as such. But it ain't the same as making a hole in one throughout one's entire golfist life.

I've played regulation courses with 5 par 3s. Would an ace on one of those not count since it's not the traditional 4?

Well, 65 yards I can buy. I'm mostly thinking about the likes of good ol' Westchester near LAX; where we used to play a lot. Mostly par 3s with a couple short par 4s and a single short par 5. Been a while but I don't think there're any par 3s shorter than 140 yards.

... It's interesting how alike we are and so radically different on this subject. Golf is difficult. More difficult than any other sport I have played. I have played in football and basketball games where I played pretty much error free. I have never come close to that in golf. My first 69 will be etched in my mind forever because I chipped in twice. So for me, any positives one can get in this game are welcome. Any ball struck for the tee that ends up in the hoe is by definition a hole in one and I really don't care it someone that lives on a course went out at dark and played the par 3 next to their house or aced the 17th at Sawgrass in a Pro Am.

... I have carded two eagles from around 65 yards but I have hit a shot in that range literally thousands of times on a golf course and the ball didn't go in the hole. It is just very difficult and/or very lucky. Obviously just my opinion and even though I like giving you a hard time on this subject I honestly do respect your opinion, but I just think life is tough enough so any hole in one is a hole in one as far as I am concerned. I am pretty sure you do count it as a hole in one, just not an official hole in one. I know some that only play par 3 or executive courses and give them the benefit of the doubt.

... I don't mean to ruffle any feathers but gawd I hate fireworks and the idiots that set them off in residential areas. I grew up on an Army base and fireworks were never allowed. Instead they had a spectacular firework display that lasted around 1 hour and out in a field aways from homes, pets and veterans. You could chose to go there and watch or chose to ignore them. The finales were just jaw dropping.

... Phoenix is filled with morons and idiots that start days before and still setting them off days after most holidays. The 4th is the worst. My biggest gripe is with Cherry bombs that only produce a very LOUD BANG! but no visual fireworks and they set these off well after midnight. 😱  With homes right on top of each other it is not only dangerous but amazingly rude, uncaring and selfish.

... Sadly, this is the street I live on. To say I hate it is an understatement but homes I Scottsdale with actual yards are well over $1,000,000. Charging $500,000 for 20,000 sq feet and right on top of each is the norm in Phoenix. And yea, my neighbors on both sides love their fireworks.
