Posting 9 hole score from different tees

Recommended Posts

Curious if anyone know how this works… GHIN lets you post 9 hole scores and then they can be combined later for an 18 hole score. Does that happen, or how does that work if the 2 nines are played from different tees? Do they have to be the same tee’s to ultimately be assigned together? Appreciate any insights!

GHIN will combine any two nines. Same course or not. The first nine will sit in limbo until you enter another one.

Not sure how the math works but it does.

Really???? I thought for sure they both at least had to be at the same course. Interesting!

It doesn't matter if it's the same course, can also add two scores from the same nine together. When you post a nine hole score the course rating/slope is shown for just the nine holes. When nines are combined the scores and course ratings are each added together and the slopes of the two averaged.

Yup. Here’s one….

That Diamond Oaks score was in there for months and then I got in a quick (cold and wet!) 9 at Morgan Creek in December. Boom. Combined.

I don't know if this is followed everywhere, but in the USGA version of the WHS:

"Where applicable, a 9-hole score waiting to be combined with another 9-hole score will be retained until it becomes older than the twentieth oldest 18-hole score in the scoring record, after which it is discarded."

If I remember correctly there are at least four ways to deal with nine-hole scores in the WHS and the U.S. method is the only one that  combines different scores (as far as I know). 🙂

Yeah, I know we don't all do it the same, that's why I tried to be specific.  IF I understand correctly, at least one jurisdiction essentially "doubles" the 9-hole score to make an 18-hole score to post.  Who knows, perhaps future refinements of the WHS will further decrease the differences between different parts of the world.

CONGU

A 9-hole score is scaled up to an equivalent 18-hole Score Differential by adding net pars for the remaining holes plus one additional stroke (which is applied to the first hole not played), or 17 points in Stableford format.
The second 9 holes used for scaling up is always the same 9 holes that have been played.

We do the same as CONGU but the second nine is the holes not played. And, like Dave, I remember some country just doubling the actual 9-hole score.

This definitely would not be an accurate prediction of my game as I’m famous for shooting 45-33 type scores.

Every course has a separate rating for each side, whether they display that info on their scorecard or not. You can look up that info on the usga website:

https://ncrdb.usga.org/

The slopes are averaged.. if the avg comes out to 139.5 .. is it rounded up or does it stay at 139?

I am no expert but am 99% certain in GHIN each nine-hole score generates a 9-hole differential using the course/slope ratings for that nine. Then the differentials are summed.

That is certainly how it works out numerically when I post 9-hole scores. Perhaps the formula is actually different and just appears the same due to rounding error. But I don't think so.

In the US

5.1b For a 9-hole Score
If a player submits a 9-hole score, an 18-hole Score Differential must be created
by combining two 9-hole Score Differentials.

Score Differential = (113 ÷ 9-hole Slope Rating) x (9-hole adjusted gross score –
9-hole Course Rating – (0.5 x PCC adjustment))

The two 9 hole scores do not have to be from the same course. The CR & Slope relate to the individual 9 holes played.
