80 Compression Balls

I prefer balls in this range also.  The list above is solid.  I'd also add the Taylormade Tour Response (a bit under 80) and the Taylormade TP5 and Bridgesone BXS (towards the higher end, pushing 90) along with the Maxfli Tour.   Every year I plan on playing just ONE ball, but always end up trying a bunch of different ones.  Being honest with myself, if I had to choose just one ball to play it would be the Tour Response (though I might say Wilson Triad if it came in yellow).  It does everything I need and I love the feel.

Are you looking for a slower, lower spinning ball? Or just a ball the feels soft?

 

the Bridgestones sound/feel softer than their compression indicates.

Are you primarily concerned with how the ball feels or trying to maximize distance? If the latter, then you are likely headed in the wrong direction given that higher compression balls tend to produce higher ball speeds across all swing speeds.

They “do” produce higher ball speeds.  The whole “soft” ball craze is not valid.  They’re shorter.

PRO V1X would give you the speed, higher flight and spin to keep it in the air longer plus the added benefit of holding greens.

 

I went for a ball fitting and this was my suggested ball for my 90-92 mph ss.

I’m looking for distance and don’t care about around the green. I’ve been playing over 50 years and never once found any difference around the green. To me, around the green means within 5 yrds. I’ve found zero difference in my ability to get up and down with a so called soft or hard ball. Twenty five years ago I was a +5 and played primarily Titelist, Callaway and Taylor made balls. I’m now a +12 and the only thing I care about is distance. My swing speed is down around 85-90 due to age and car accident injuries in the 90’s . For decades all I heard was lower compression balls were better for slower swing speeds because the ball compressed more creating more spring off the face. I’m chasing distance period.

This is a perpetuated myth when it comes to solid core balls. Take a look at the 2019 MyGolf$py ball test. When comparing the flagship balls from the big 5 OEMs, the higher compression model produced higher smash factors at all club head speeds (the lowest speed surprisingly produced slightly higher smash factors than the highest speed across all models). With that said, lower compression models have a tendency to spin less than their higher compression counterpart, but the variance in spin off the tee is much less with solid core balls than it was with the Haskell wound construction.

 

Ultimately, my recommendation is to play the highest compression multilayer urethane ball that you can tolerate the feel of (from one of the big 5 OEMs or DTCs that leverage the Foremost/Nassau factories) if you are solely focused on distance off the tee.
