Anyone planning on trying the G430 irons?

I mentioned above that I got a set of g430's in from the global golf U Try it program.   Alta Reg flex which is the same as my G425 (retro lofts).

 

I put them through their paces on Trackman and came up with the following numbers (below).

Pretty much boils down to lofts as the 430's are std lofts and the 425's are retro lofts.

My suspicion is that if the 425's were std lofts they would go the same exact distances.  Which is not a knock on the 430's just pointing it out if someone is looking for big gains over their 425's.  Also, please disregard my 9i carry on the 430.  I didn't realize the shots I hit were all pull hooks which inflated their carry's.  I was trying something with my swing on those shots and it didn't work out.  I have hit the 9i on the course and its a solid 125 yd club which makes it gap off with the 8 and PW.

In the event members haven't seen my July 19th update in the WRX Club Techs forum, I had an amazing round today with my G430 irons & finally achieved my goal to break (72) par. My putter helped with four birdies, shot 70 my P/B round ever, felt like a big accomplishment, I flirted with it over the past number of years but finally got it done today.

 

Got my new G430 irons on March 11th my cap was around 10, today was my 34th round with my new sticks, broke 80 now 17 times, today was a milestone, cap is down to 6.1.  The new G430's with the jacked lofts have been a game changer, they're the best set of irons I ever owned, got my distance back, nice high trajectory, very forgiving on miss hits and the ball hits & holds the greens.  I'll be 68 next week, that number is my new target milestone.

 

For those thinking about upgrading your irons, definitely give the G430's some consideration.

Congrats! That's awesome. Just curious, what ball are you playing? Did you end up going with a higher-spin ball to pair with these irons?

Normally play Pro V1, today was a Taylormade TP5, it made it around the course & followed me home.

 

May have to put a few more TP5's in the bag.

I had gamed G425s 6-UW with Retro spec lofts for about a year.  In May switched over to G430s in standard lofts.

Below are my results according to Shot Scope's strokes gained metrics.  Granted its tough to discern iron gains directly from these metrics but in terms of approaches its saying I am almost 2 strokes better and my scoring average has come down 1.7 strokes.  Total Strokes gained 2.99.  I will take that as I have been pretty stagnant for the past 3-4 yrs in terms of scoring improvement.

I'll be honest. Coming from Retro spec'd G425 6-UW set I wasn't sure how the G430's would work out and had me skeptical.   I was looking at all kind of funky setups with tweaking lofts if I adopted the G430's but I decided to just stick with std lofts and see how it would work out for me.

 

When I had the G425's retros this is how my gaps worked out:

6 - 147 yds

7 - 137 yds

8 - 127 yds

9 - 117 yds

PW - 107 yds

UW - 95 yds

On a firm warm day I might have been able to stretch them out each 3 more yds to hit even gaps of 150/140/130/120/110/95 etc but really had to strike it clean to see those yardages.  

I never really had a 155 club and would have to choke down an inch and take something off my 26* hybrid to cover that shot.  

 

With the G430's in std lofts now my setup is:

(it's one more club which kinda stinks, but I like my distances and gaps better and it flows nicely into my 5h which is my 165-170 club and my 56* which is my 85 yd club.

8 - 135

9 - 125

PW - 115

45 - 105

50 - 95

I bought a bunch of Trackman rental punch cards when Golf Galaxy was having a big sale, so in the winter when it's under 35ish degrees I drop by there for an hour on the Trackman instead of going to the driving range -- with those punch cards bought at a discount, it's about the same price as a large bucket.

 

Every time I'm there, I ask them to put together a G430 demo, and am stunned how easy it is to hit and how it spins more than other game improvement irons I've tried. I love my i230s ... but it's the winter, I can't get out on the course, and @ZipinZ's experience has me tempted to get a set to mess around with!

If you can find a used 7 or 8 iron on flee-bay, that would be a place to start, if you have to, pull the shaft and replace it with something that fits your swing, not a big deal.

I am currently gaming the Ping G410 irons, and I really like them. I tried a set of G425 and hated them; the 5, 6, 7 were less forgiving IMO as compared to the G410. It looks like the G430 is more like the G410.
