Used Taylormade TP5x golf ball question

I have a question about the top layer and next layer for the TP5x golf ball. I bought 6 dozen near mint used balls, not refinished balls. So far not thrilled with the quality. Is the top white layer just coloring or is it the urethane layer? On my balls, it is incredibly thin. I ask because even a minor scuff on the outside is showing a brown second layer. Is this normal?

 

edited. Ok, just cut a ball in half from a different batch and it does not have a brown layer. The second layer is green. Started to feel like a large portion of my balls are questionable.

 

edited again. Cut two more balls in half and they are legitimate. Not sure what year these were produced. The last two I cut in half have grey cores and the second layer is gray also. The first one has a red core. As far as the first paragraph in my OP, I guess the brown is dirt but looks more like part of the ball. I did have one ball split today and I have never had this happen.

I left the used ball market some years ago bought 2 dozen NXTs. The first few were horrible. Had my partner hit one, he agreed. I got home scrubbed a few with a wire brush. And cut a few open. They were all different 2 piece balls repainted and re stamped. And came from one of the bigger used ball retailers at that time. Since then only new balls. 
 

the good news with the TP5 is the number of 5 layer balls is pretty low, like maybe just those and the prior names, Penta and Lethal.

Used balls are a shaky proposition. You never really know what you’re getting. There’s too many good deals on premium balls to risk it with used to save a few $.

Keep cutting. You'll get to the bottom of it.

Used balls, you’ve got no idea what you’re getting, as you’ve found out.  It’s a crapshoot.
