Trail hip firing early and toward ball

Are you talking about actually being on that slider or just on the ground?

On the ground. Reminds me of Sevam1's former post many years ago. Screwing your trail leg-foot into the ground to make a brace on the trail side to pevent a sway.

It isn't a mechanical problem it's a conceptual problem and all the band aids in the world won't fix it.

if your concept of how to sequence the pivot, hands and club in balance is off then everything else will be off.

Look at the concept contained in this video. It may change the way you think.

Check out what the AMG guys say starting at 14:00. Holding the right hip back and passive on the downswing is just as bad an idea as "firing" the hips. As Sean says, some people need to "feel like the trail hip is hitting the ball," not staying back.

This is one of the most helpful things they have found IMO. Amateurs keep the trail hip back or in flexion too long compared to tour pros.

Yup, Old Ben Hogan drill I'm doing. Stick a club horizontal on rear hip and rotate it 90 degrees to impact. For me I feel right hip hitting the ball, pelvis moving different, shorter BS, right knee staying inside left at finish which Harrington advocates. I don't even think about the arms and wrists right now because I've been working on that for 2 yrs. with not the success I want. Sequence in .25 seconds ugh.

As AMG guys explain, holding right hip back too long is a product of inordinate fear of early extension.

Yes. It is also the product of teachers saying that the right hip should stay back in the downswing while the left hip clears. Not only is this impossible, it almost guarantees the early extension it was designed to prevent.

It’s possible to contrive a golf swing doing that move, but it’s not what pros are doing.

Some might argue that keeping the right hip back and cleaning the left hip is a feel for those who have an issue with the trail hip, but as AMG says, based on the amateurs they have measured it is far more common for amateurs to keep the trail hip back and in flexion too long compared to pros.

This is IMO, AMG’s best video “tip” for amateurs. Specifically mid to higher handicap golfers but even some single digits

AMG don’t really get into “how” to do it properly in this clip but understanding this concept is of great value. With so many golfers being afraid of early extension or sliding in the downswing, some try to artificially keep the right hip back and rotate the left hip and/or stay in flexion of the trail hip. This isn’t what pros do. Sean demonstrates what happens if you try to do that. They said they see it every day.

To add, there is a ton of content out there about spinning the butt backwards and staying in flexion with passive hips. No feel is off limits, but this is on a different planet from what most tour players are doing. If there is a nearly universal move among tour players, this is it.

The big thing to understand is that many people are going to hurt their back if they attempt to do this by watching how it looks in this very short video. Doing it correctly involves using both hips correctly.

This video goes into detail on the trail hip

Haven’t read all the posts so apologies if this has been said already but for me the left pocket back feel never worked. What finally clicked for me was feeling like my right hip socket worked forward and away from the ball in transition. Forward meaning towards target.

I'd been messing around lately with trying to keep both cheeks on the wall in order to not early extend on the downswing and it doesn't work.

At all.

Now I know why.

Funny seeing this resurrected here again.  Kinda psyched, had a cool finding today that sorta relates to this very topic wanted to share. I get a bad case of the laterals from time to time.  @MonteScheinblum has always told me I don't get my right hip turned back enough in backswing, and being distantly challenged I have the bad habit of then lunging into the downswing with my hips like any old-time player was taught to fire UP and thru the ball.  Except it's usually up and at the ball pushing the right elbow out and away and the shaft/hosel smack dab into the ball. AUGH.

This weekend it's 40 degrees here in Chicago area, snowing melting for most parts so good enough for me these past few days to take the foam balls outside and dust off cobwebs.

I've been taking a deep dive into Monte's Power Shift video and some of the drills.  His Shift and Rotate drill, 1. Start with left foot stepping back to right foot; 2) step back to left making backswing; and 3) feel sensation of rotating while moving left.  Wow.

I literally texted @MonteScheinblum this afternoon while I was out hitting asking him is it a bad thing I'm hitting the ball better, crisper, more solid, using this drill than when I set up to hit the ball normally!? Felt powerful, nice full follow thru.

Very encouraged that this move into the left starting down holds up. I know I should keep this to myself and not tempt the golfing gods, but what the heck.

Another big part is Monte's insta about proper hip use. Right hip moves back and around in Backswing and Left hipo moves back in downswing. Most of us am's seem to do it backwards.

Terrible idea(Sevam’s).  Instead learn knee action and ground forces.

Time to bring this thread back! Had a lesson with Monte and I’m seeing some progress. My intent is not to move my hips at all in the backswing. Not to restrict them, but to not move them. Then lead the downswing with my arms while staying closed. Even delay my hips a little. It got ugly for a while there boys. Skanks, tops, weak fades and slices. Things are looking up.
